He hasn't been seen since last October, following a loss in his second consecutive pay-per-view (PPV) shot at Alberto Del Rio's World Heavyweight Championship. The loss at Battleground capped a roughly four month run with WWE that surprised supporters and doubters alike with both the uniformly positive crowd reaction and the high quality of matches he brought at (then) age 42, and coming off a lackluster run with TNA.
Because of those factors and the omnipresent rumor mill, it was always assumed that he'd be back before too long. Now, the latest edition of Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer (for which you can subscribe by clicking right here) reports that Rob Van Dam will make his WWE return on April 7, 2014.
That would be the night after WrestleMania 30, which ruins our prediction that he would be a surprise entrant in The Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, but perhaps this is a leak to add to the surprise of his showing up on April 6th. It certainly points to him being in town, since the Raw following The Showcase of the Immortals is also booked for New Orleans.
Meltzer reports that this will be another "several month run" with WWE. It's hard to imagine that he'll be inserted into a somewhat crowded scene for the now unified main belts, but he should provide star power to the upper-mid-card at a time when part-timers like Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker will be taking their annual post-WrestleMania leave.
