Is Randy Orton turning babyface after WrestleMania XXX?

Randy Orton - back to showing off his babyface fire after WrestleMania 30? - Gallo Images

With CM Punk seemingly gone for good, part-timer Batista struggling to get fans to cheer for him and Daniel Bryan looking doomed to always be WWE's red-headed stepchild, Randy Orton could soon be turned back babyface to be John Cena's understudy once again.

In an intriguing development, WWE heavily teased on the Feb. 10th Monday Night Raw that the non-title main event between John Cena and Randy Orton, which Cena unsurprisingly won with the Attitude Adjustment, would be the last singles match they would have against each other, at least for the foreseeable future.

Of course, this may just be a lie to try and pop a larger rating or a vow that the WWE creative team quickly forget about, but it could also be a subtle foreshadowing of future storylines. If WWE plans to turn Randy Orton babyface immediately after WrestleMania XXX, then they could confidently hype a final confrontation with John Cena knowing that their paths won't cross against each other for some time to come.

That's how Dave Meltzer was reading the tea leaves in this week's subscriber only Wrestling Observer Newsletter:

"[John Cena] said the fate of the title is at the Elimination Chamber but tonight’s match is about the future, pretty much saying it’s their last match. A few years ago they did the exact same storyline for one of their matches, right before [Randy] Orton did a face turn. It sure came off like Orton’s going face which seems to mean [Bray] Wyatt is going to get the gigantic push as I can’t see anyone else as top heel. He said that tonight will end the Cena vs. Orton rivalry and I will beat him in front of a sold out crowd in Los Angeles."

With Wyatt pencilled in to face John Cena at WrestleMania 30, it's clear he'll be elevated to headliner status, but it remains to be seen whether he will be the top heel in the promotion.

Given Batista's lukewarm WWE return, including fans vociferously rebelling against his Royal Rumble victory, a likely scenario would be The Animal joining forces with The Authority and being Triple H's new handpicked face of the company, whilst poor Randy is kicked to the kerb again just like the summer of 2004. It certainly would be a logical conclusion to Orton's heel run, given all the run ins he's had with Hunter and Steph over the last few months.

If WWE are indeed considering an Orton turn, then this is yet more evidence that CM Punk has gone home for good, as his departure leaves the spot of the number two babyface in WWE wide open.

It also suggests that they aren't happy with the alternative options. As mentioned earlier, Batista has struggled to get the fans fully behind him so far and also won't be working a full time road schedule, so even if he sticks with the role of being a good guy, there's a need for another top babyface to headline the non-Cena house shows on weekends he's off work.

What about Daniel Bryan I hear you say? Well, if Vince McMahon was confident in his abilities to carry the load by himself, then he would have already had more than a cup of coffee with the WWE title belt and Batista wouldn't have been flown back in from Hollywood with the opportunity to headline WrestleMania handed to him on a silver platter.

What do you think, Cagesiders? Would you be happy to see The Viper playing it by the rules again and stop being such an ungrateful whiner? Or is it just like wrapping up a stale old sandwich in shiny new packaging? An act that is long past its sell by date.
