It's been reported that Brock Lesnar's contract with WWE will be coming up in April of next year, just after WrestleMania 31 takes place in Santa Clara, California. That gives the company plenty of time to negotiate a new deal or plot a strong exit strategy for the man who is currently on one of the best runs of his pro wrestling career.
That includes besting Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania 30, then squashing John Cena to win the WWE world heavyweight championship at SummerSlam.
Lesnar, though he may not look it, is a savvy businessman with great representation. He's already leveraging WWE against a possible return to the UFC for another run in its heavyweight division, as mentioned by the Wrestling Observer:
In almost predictable fashion, there was talk yesterday regarding Brock Lesnar and UFC, as there will be since Lesnar will certainly talk with UFC and WWE in order to get the best deal possible for his next contract. I expect that would be for WWE but with his drawing power, he could go back to UFC. With UFC there are issues with age and health. The claim is that he's completely cured of diverticulitis and was never 100% during his UFC run.
Lesnar's last run in the UFC ended with two consecutive first round knockout losses to Cain Velasquez -- who still holds the heavyweight championship -- and Alistair Overeem, respectively. Typically, losing in such convincing fashion would kill any fighter's drawing power, but both Lesnar and UFC President Dana White have been working the angle that, as mentioned by Dave Meltzer, Lesnar never fully recovered from his various bouts with diverticulitis.
Here's White working the angle in the event that Brock decides he wants to come back to the Octagon for one more run:
"I have a great relationship with Brock, we talk all the time. I don't know, we'll see. If he wants to fight, he knows my number. ... It's pretty amazing what he did and accomplished here while having diverticulitis. It would be interesting to see a 100 percent healthy Brock Lesnar compete."
While it's entirely possible Lesnar is at least considering another run in the UFC, if he can get another good deal to stay with WWE, there's little reason to believe he would leave his currently cushy job to go back to actually getting hit in the face for a living instead of pretending to do so.
Stay tuned.
