Considering the subject matter and the cast of characters, it wouldn't have been the least bit surprising if Total Divas, the E! channel's reality show based on the lives of seven WWE Divas both in and outside the ring, had bombed in the ratings. Internally, expectations were high, but outside of that few thought the program would become a success.
But that hasn't happened. Actually, five episodes of the first season have made it to air and the numbers have been positive every week, so much so that six additional episodes were ordered to begin filming immediately.
Here's how the first five episodes have done, including this past Sunday night's viewership total:
Episode one: 1.34 million
Episode two: 1.53 million
Episode three: 1.67 million
Episode four: 1.34 million
Episode five: 1.46 million
It should be noted that the fourth episode went head-to-head with SummerSlam and was forced to live and die on its own with almost none of the WWE marketing muscle pushing it. Still, the number held up fine.
It should also be noted that this past Sunday night's episode went head-to-head with the MTV Video Music Awards, which is always a huge show. Indeed, the VMA's did over 10 million viewers, which makes the Total Divas number more impressive.
So, despite strong competition for weeks now, the show is holding up just fine. We can safely say it's been a success for all involved. Just imagine how different things may have been if this had been on the WWE Network that may or may not ever launch.
