WWE will return to the pay-per-view (PPV) airwaves on Sun., June 16, 2013, with its inaugural Payback event at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois. The concept of the show is something like what Backlash used to represent except it occurs after the show after WrestleMania, Extreme Rules.
Plus, Payback just sounds cool.
Here's the current match card and rumors:
- John Cena vs. Ryback (Ambulance match for the WWE championship)
This was set up following the Last Man Standing match between the two going to a no contest at Extreme Rules. Yes, that makes zero sense, but it didn't stop WWE from doing everything it can to avoid actually having someone do a job for someone else. Because in today's pro wrestling world, everyone has to have heat all the time, even if that means matches have become less than meaningless. This time, though, we're supposed to believe someone is definitely going to lose because all that has to happen is one of them gets thrown into the back of an ambulance that will then drive away. They better hope Zack Ryder isn't driving and the ambulance gets a flat tire. Hell, that might be the way to give them another non-finish.
That's the only official match for the card but current rumors have CM Punk possibly returning at this show, even if it's for a one-off teaser appearance. It's in Chicago, so it's obvious why the company would want him there, but he's enjoying his vacation.
In the meantime, we'll keep you up to date on any other Payback news as it comes in.
