Although it seemed Randy Orton and Sheamus would team with Big Show to take on The Shield at WrestleMania 29, it appears WWE wanted to go in a different direction and Ryback was inserted into the match.
For weeks now, the rumors circulating in the pro wrestling world have had Big Show teaming up with Randy Orton and Sheamus for a six man tag team match against The Shield as one of the marquee undercard matches at WrestleMania 29 on Sun., April 7, 2013, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Those rumors, for now, have been proven wrong. Or, at the very least, the always eccentric Vince McMahon has once again changed his mind.
Indeed, during last night's airing of Friday Night SmackDown on SyFy, it was revealed that Ryback will team with Orton and Sheamus for the match. From the WWE.com preview announcing as much:
After weeks of vicious attacks and fierce reprisals, the infamous Shield threw down the gauntlet on the March 15 edition of SmackDown. Unhappy with not being part of The Showcase of The Immortals, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns interrupted the post-match celebration of two Superstars who have been locked in their crosshairs of late: Randy Orton and Sheamus. The treacherous trio told the two former World Champions to find a partner to face them in a Six-Man Tag Team Match on The Grandest Stage of Them All on April 7.
Never ones to back down from a fight, The Viper and the Irish brawler immediately declared the blockbuster match was on, and quickly set out to find a powerhouse third Superstar who is just as hungry to defeat the "Hounds of Justice" as they are. Although Big Show - evidently still steaming from two Triple Powerbombs at the hands of The Shield - offered his imposing services, Orton and Sheamus had already selected the "Human Wrecking Ball" Ryback for this WrestleMania demolition!
It should be noted that it's entirely possible the booking is such that Ryback doesn't end up in the match and Show is inserted at a later time. After all, they have used up a ton of television time building towards Show taking on The Shield, though the two sides are both working as heels and it does make a measure of sense to have the two babyfaces find another one of their own kind to team with.
If it sticks, it would obviously mean Mark Henry will be doing something else and the HOSS FIGHT so many of us were looking forward to is no more.
Pity.
Here's the updated WrestleMania 29 match card and line-up:
- The Rock vs. John Cena
- Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger
- Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar
- Undertaker vs. CM Punk
- The Shield vs. Randy Orton, Sheamus, Ryback
