Chris Jericho's latest return to WWE didn't come with any cryptic videos leading up to a pre-planned date to hype it as a major event. There was no countdown clock, no code to break, and certainly no creepy little boy and girl acting like two little creepers teasing the end of the world as we know it.
Instead, he just showed up as the number two entrant in the Royal Rumble match back on Jan. 27, 2013, in Phoenix, Arizona.
It was a genuinely shocking return, too, thanks to the fact that both Jericho and those in the know at WWE managed to stay tight lipped all the way up until "BREAK THE WALLS DOWN" came shouting over the loud speakers at the US Airways Center.
How did they pull it off? In the above video, Jericho explains:
"In this day and age, it's almost impossible to keep a secret. It was just really, really cool to know we can still keep a secret and keep a nice surprise. But there was no rumors at all that Jericho was going to come back at the Rumble. If I go to a movie, I don't want to know what the end of it is before I go.
"What would people expect if Jericho was coming back? Well, some kind of complicated ruse. I thought, 'what if there was no clues and I just showed up?' I like being the master of puppets sometimes, when it comes to fans, and I think we kind of really surprised a lot of experts that think they know everything but they really don't. I think that's one of the reasons why the reaction was so huge. It's definitely one of the best nights of my career.
"The hardest part was just waiting for the shoe to drop and waiting for somebody to find out I was going to be there. I was like so scared, like kind of crawling under the cover of night to get to this little bus where I was hiding hoping that no one would see me, like some parking attendant going 'oh, Jericho's here.' And when nobody did, I was just like 'this is amazing.'"
Jericho didn't just return at the Rumble for a nostalgia pop, he went over 40 minutes as the number two entrant and was very nearly the match's Iron Man. He's also signed through WrestleMania for yet another big match that will surely see him putting someone over.
Long live the king.
