That Was Awesome

That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): John Morrison busts out the parkour

Photo

So a couple of weeks ago, everyone went googoo gaga nuts over Kofi Kingston's walking handstand at the 2012 Royal Rumble. And with good reason. It was amazing. The Rumble has one rule and one rule only: once both of your feet touch the mat, you're eliminated.

Blowing a huge Ghana-sized hole in the Rumble's rule was Kingston who definitely was touching the mat although his feet were nowhere near it.

It reminded me of an equally insane move from the previous year. During the 2011 Royal Rumble, the now Future Endeavored John Morrison was doing his best to main event WrestleMania when he was tossed from the apron on what appeared to be a collision course with the security barrier.

But yeah right. Morrison is the "King of Parkour" or didn't you know?

That was awesome (clap clap clapclapclap): No one has a family feud quite like Vince McMahon's household

Photo

It has become cliché to describe Vince McMahon showing up on both Raw and Nitro on March 26, 2001 as surreal. But that's exactly what it was. I couldn't wrap my brain around what was going on but I knew pro wrestling would never be the same again.

Two hours later, it was revealed -- storyline-wise -- that WCW did indeed have a new owner but it wasn't Vinnie Mac, it was Shane-O. This led to a huge family feud that even Richard Dawson wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

It culminated at WrestleMania X-7 -- 17 for those of you who don't speak or read "Attitude Era" -- where Shane busted out a move that would become a staple in his limited albeit exciting repertoire: the Coast to Coast.

Also known as the Van Terminator by Rob Van Dam fans, it consists of jumping the length of the ring and kicking an object -- usually a folding chair or trash can -- into your prone opponent's face. Seems impossible, right? Especially for the son of a millionaire? Wrong!

Presented for your viewing pleasure -- as recommended by mountaineers101 -- is the Street Fight in its entirety but you can fast forward to the 18 minute mark for the money shot.

Sit down, Val Venis, we're not talking about you.

That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Catch wrestling is fun!

Photo

First off, I love that picture.

Second off, I'm starting to love catch wrestling.

I stayed up from midnight to 9am watching a Japanese mixed martial arts (MMA) show last night ... today ... whatever and it included a handful of matches from Inoki Genome Federation (IGF). Two were snoozers but one in particular was fantastic.

It was Josh Barnett taking on Hideki Suzuki and it reminded me a lot of the old Union of Wrestling Forces International (UWF-i) stuff that I had seen back in the day. That kind of submission grappling always appealed to me but when I discovered it, finding Japanese tapes from the early 1990s wasn't exactly all that easy.

Now that YouTube is around, you can find all sorts of wonderful stuff like this clip of Pride Fighting Championships veteran and Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba taking on Kiyoshi Tamura.

That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Some more CMLL action for you on Christmas Eve

Photo

So the last installment of "That was awesome" starred CMLL star Máscara Dorada. And it melted my mind.

I haven't given lucha libre a fair shake but if it includes stuff like what Dorada pulled off, I can probably ignore the fact it looks insanely fake.

Also, I love masks and I can't go wrong there.

So ever since I saw the aforementioned Dorada clip, I've been scouring YouTube for other clips and I think I've found one that matches the awesomeness of the previous one.

Delta is a second generation star who has been wrestling under the mask for the past two and a half years. Here, he does something that I not only didn't think was possible but something I never even thought of and I've spent countless hours thinking of crazy stuff to do in wrestling matches.

Seriously, it's kind of sad.

Anyway, enjoy!

That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Máscara Dorada is your new favorite wrestler

Certified baller

There's really not much I can say about this video.

It's lucha libre which anyone who follows this series knows I'm not a fan of to begin with. It's a wrestler I hadn't heard of until a week ago and hadn't seen until minutes before writing this.

So it goes without saying I walked into this blind with zero expectations, good or bad. Stupid me, I didn't know what I was in for.

That being said, I am completely obsessed with Máscara Dorado -- Golden Mask -- now. This might be the most awesome thing I've ever seen in a wrestling match.

As suggested by Cagesider -- and third favorite Canadian ever behind Bret Hart and Shenae Grimes -- Lance Storm, here is what may be the most amazing thing I've ever seen in my freakin' life.

That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Mike Awesome and Masato Tanaka collide in a series of hardcore wars

Photo via FMW Wrestling

Continuing a feud they started in Japan's Frontier Martial-arts Wrestling (FMW), Mike Awesome and Masato Tanaka wowed even the most bloodthirsty ECW fan with their brutal matches on Hardcore TV and Heat Wave 1998.

The two would meet again a year later at Anarchy Rulz in one of the most infamous matches -- and trust me, they had a lot of those -- in ECW history. World Champion Taz -- with one Z -- was supposed to take on Tanaka in a singles match but Awesome was shoehorned in to make it a three-way dance.

A couple of minutes later, Taz was pinned and on his way to ECW, leading the two FMW veterans to battle. Awesome won out and would once again come out on top when he retained against the Japanese hardcore legend two months later at November to Remember.

As requested by Cagesider xXLINDEXx -- and I couldn't be happier to do so -- here's Awesome's match with Tanaka from the first ECW: One Night Stand event several years after their fantastic feud.

It wasn't their best meeting but hopefully it'll serve as an appetizer for those of you who haven't seen their classics.

That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Kane uses Rob Van Dam to demolish a cage

Photo

Professional wrestling lives and dies by convincing people that something is real when it's not.

That's why stuff like CM Punk's infamous pipe bomb promo this past summer and 1997's Montreal Screwjob are so fascinating. It challenges the preconceived notion that whatever you're seeing on your TV has been scripted and was planned well in advance.

As far as Punk's promo goes, it was what's known as a worked shoot -- a term for storylines or occurrences that appear to deviate from the script but actually don't. With the Montreal Screwjob ... well, I think we all know exactly how real that was.

If you have any doubts, check out Bret Hart's tears in the WWE Greatest Rivalries DVD that was released a couple of months ago.

But then there are times that can't be figured out. Today's entry is exactly one of those instances. I always wondered if what took place was actually planned or if something had gone awry. Apparently, I wasn't the only one.

Check it out.

That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): King Tonga shocks Poughkeepsie by slamming Big John Studd

Photo

Long before Tursas got bodyslammed by Green Ant in CHIKARA and even a few years before Lex Luger picked up and slammed Yokozuna on the dock of the USS Intrepid, "Big" John Studd was walking around the WWF claiming that no man could take him off his feet and put him on his back.

Wrestlers from every corner of the locker room would come out and try to earn $10,000 -- the amount Bobby "The Brain" Heenan put up as a reward -- but no one could manage the feat. One night in New York, two men tried to accomplish the task but even with their combined strength, they couldn't get the big man down.

But thank goodness for the Tongans!

As requested by Cageside's own Jesse Holland, here's King Tonga aka Haku aka Meng aka Prince Tonga aka King Haku bodyslamming the un-bodyslammable (?) Studd.
