Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan's Been Answering a Lot of Questions on Twitter

Hulkhogancrotchchopgetty_mediumOver at Wrestling Inc. they've compiled a list of Hulk Hogan tweets answering various questions. It's a fascinating look at what Hogan thinks:

On heel Hogan coming back: "never say never."

On American Gladiators coming back: "no the show was to expensive to produce when u can do the same number with a cheap reality show"

On Halloween Havoc 99 where he laid down for Sting: "those were wack times. That was the old Russo and the old me.it was all stupid"

On Steve Austin turning down his WrestleMania challenge a few years ago: "he always said if there was money to be made let's do it , I thought he was serious"

On bringing Steve Austin to TNA, because he is the biggest draw in wrestling history: "oh he is ?"

On whether he reported Jesse Ventura to Vince McMahon when Jesse was trying to form a union: "Vince already knew about it, I just said I didn't think it was a good idea. jesse a clown, at that's how the boys have though of him. he was running his mouth like usual trying to get everyone in board everyone knew"

On whether he'd be welcomed back to WWE: "all I can say is,if there's money to be made,Vince is all business"

On whose idea it was for the Mr. America character: "mine, but Vince was supposed to run with it.the hatred knew it would get over so they killed it.the first match in the garden"

On what he would do differently in life: - "get divorced instantly after Nick was born"

On the steroid situation in WWE in the 80s: - "horrible, that the kind of stuff most guys did before breakfast that's a shoot"

On whether Vince McMahon would send a main eventer to rehab: "Vince doesn't play games with anybody.he treats everyone the same way"

On whether anyone tried to shoot on him in the ring:"ya , couple guys.Billy Robinson and fuginami in japan"

On Bret Hart's return: "I love Brett because I know who he really is. Really glad to see him back"

On Hiro Matsuda breaking his ankle as Hogan was starting out: "30yrs ago that's how they got rid of marks in the fla territory"

On the rumour that he and Shawn Michaels fought over Shawn's overselling at SummerSlam: "Not true"

On Randy Orton: "he's got it figured out. There only very few who really get it"

On wrestling The Rock at WrestleMania: "it freaked me out when 75thousand booed him"

Couple things stand out. Somebody telling Hogan that Austin is the biggest draw in wrestling history is hilarious. Hogan replying by saying, "oh he is?" is even more hilarious. I don't know what the barometer would be to gauge such a thing but if I had to put money on either guy I would go with Stone Cold. Also found it interesting that he would say that there was not a disagreement with Shawn Michaels over Summerslam 2005. That's not what HBK has said and although his word doesn't mean all that much, it carries a lot more weight than Hogan's. His memory is also shot or he's just overly full of himself in regards to the WrestleMania match with The Rock. Were there people booing Rock? Yes. Everybody in the arena? No. Not even close. Hogan was cheered plenty that night but so was Rock. That crowd was mostly split and they marked out for every spot in that match. But hey, that's the kind of thing you get with a guy like Hogan.

[Obvious Story Is Obvious] Hulk Hogan is pitching a new reality show

Sure, why not? (Getty Images)

Sure, why not? (Getty Images)

Broadcasting & Cable has posted a story about Hulk Hogan's latest reality show plans, and being a mainsteam story with quotes from Hogan himself, it's amazing.

Hogan told me he has talked to networks such as A&E, TruTV and Fox about a new show documenting what he calls “the resurrection of Hulk Hogan.”

“To see a brand like Elvis or Madonna or Hulk Hogan just crash and burn and then have so many people want to see me get back on my feet, that’s the story that no one has,” says Terry Bollea (whom you and I know as Hulk Hogan).

...

“Things are good. My life is good. I changed my thinking: Instead of hating the world, hating the neighbors, hating everyone, I got away from that craziness I had in my head. I’m just moving forward.”

Hulk Hogan is a brand on the level of Elvis and Madonna.  Awesome.

Hulk Hogan sues over Cocoa Pebbles commercial parody character, has back problems that are getting much worse

Pastamania_medium

It's being reported everywhere that Hulk Hogan is suing Post Foods over this commercial for Cocoa Pebbles, which features a wrestler character who resembles him named "Bulk Boulder":

Since parody isn't quite as protected when used in an endorsement, Hogan doesn't seem to have a bad case.  It doesn't hurt that he started his career as Terry "The Hulk" Boulder.

I love this tidbit from the linked story:

The complaint lists all sorts of tidbits about his career, such as the fact that he was the most-requested celebrity of the 1980s for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and had the single biggest 900 phone number from 1991 to 1993.

Meanwhile, Ric Flair did an interview where he mentioned that Hogan's back problems (and upcoming surgery) could mean the end of his career. Hogan's been in a lot of pain and had trouble functioning well, which is something that others have mentioned recently.  Dave Meltzer has speculated that he may use it as an excuse to leave TNA with his head held high.

Hulk Hogan has heart scare while undergoing check-up in preparation for back surgery

Hulk-hogan_medium

According to TMZ, some sort of irregularities showed up on Hulk Hogan's EKG when he went in for a check-up as part of preparation for another back surgery.  He followed up with a cardiologist who did more extensive tests, and it appears that as far as they can tell, his heart is fine and he should be healthy enough to get the back surgery done.  His back has been in really bad shape for a while now, with plenty of stories of how badly he's functioning when not on camera, and he's already had at least one back surgery somewhat recently.

Hulk Hogan picked up a new gig the same day he settled the Graziano lawsuit

Hoganrentacenter_medium

In all of the coverage of the Hulkster settling with the Graziano family, nobody seemed to notice that he announced a new endorsement deal the same day.

For Rent-A-Center.

With Hogan having done so few deals like this in the past and how "rent to own" companies come of as mildly questionable at best, the timing of this sure is...interesting.

He joins Troy Aikman, who was already doing ads for the company and somehow seems less out of place even though he has a high profile broadcasting gig.

The press release (which includes lines like "Hulk Hogan has stayed relevant because people like and respect what he stands for. That's the affiliation we are leveraging for our current customers and target prospects.") and the commercial itself (where Hogan essentially teaches Aikman how to be more charismatic) are both awesome.

Hulk Hogan settles lawsuit filed against him by the Graziano family

Nick Hogan's car after crashing it

Nick Hogan's car after crashing it

TMZ.com reports that Hulk Hogan has sensibly settled out of court the lawsuit filed against him and his son Nick by the Graziano family.  The lawsuit came about after Nick crashed his car while allegedly racing against another driver, leaving his passenger John critically injured with a cracked skull and bad brain damage, injuries he will never fully recover from, thus necessitating the need for life long nursing home care.  Hogan was in a tough position legally given that he apparently bought the small amount of alcohol found in his son's system after he crashed the car.  It also didn't help that Hogan was taped in prison saying to his son Nick that God had laid some heavy shit on John Graziano because of the things he was into, with Nick agreeing he was a negative person.  No wonder Hogan wanted to avoid a media circus!

Hulk Hogan Thinks Pro Wrestling Could Learn from MMA

Hulk Hogan isn't just about the Big Boot and Legdrop anymore.

Hulk Hogan isn't just about the Big Boot and Legdrop anymore.

Pro wrestling has always been seen as a rather incestuous industry; since Vince McMahon took over the reigns of WWE all of those years ago, wrestling hasn't really strayed from his formula. It makes sense because it worked, and it worked for a very long time. If you watch current MMA, boxing, kickboxing or pro wrestling, you can be sure the presentation has a lot to thank from Vince McMahon as well as the promoters he shamelessly stole ideas from and re-branded as his own. The only problem is, the pro wrestling formula is arguably quite dated. Stars like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock were all enough to keep fans interested and building new fans.

The problem is now the current fanbase has dwindled a bit. It happens, it was expected, but the problem is the fans who grew up watching wrestling who will fondly talk about Papa Shango cursing the Ultimate Warrior and Stone Cold flipping off the boss before showering him in beer and giving him a Stone Cold Stunner have moved on. While fans do grow out of wrestling, the problem is when they reproduce and start a family, they won't flip on the television to WWE and reminisce with their children as to the crazy grapplers they loved growing up and support their fandom. Instead, they will most likely be tuning into UFC and telling their kids about when Chuck Liddell knocked Tito Ortiz into oblivion or the epic encounters between Chuck and Randy Couture.

Hulk Hogan, of all people, has been described as a guy who holds onto his legacy and is resistant to change. So it is surprising to look at his recent interview with Fanhouse on how he views MMA and wants to learn from it.

"MMA is spanking the WWE as far as the pay-per-view stuff," Hogan told FanHouse on Tuesday. "Dana White and the UFC has done an amazing job, and it's all about timing. The UFC was ready to close its doors, they were losing a ton of money, they were going under, they were getting ready to go out of business, and then they did a reality show called, The Ultimate Fighter. They developed the characters; they made people care about the fighters; the people found out who the fighters were; they breathed life into the fighters. That's what I want to do with TNA. They've got the best talent in the world down there, but no one is breathing life into the characters."

Not only will Hogan be appearing on TNA television in a role he describes as, "the Vince McMahon of TNA," he also said that he will be running the show creatively behind-the-scenes. It is there that the 56-year-old will look to emulate what the UFC has been able to accomplish over the past decade.

"I have learned a ton of stuff from MMA, watching them," he said. "They remind me of TNA. Ton of talent, but no one has put that Frankenstein, shock the monster, breathe some life into the characters. I learned a ton from MMA, and I get along great with Dana White -- he's awesome."
