Why Sting should win the WWE title at Night of Champions

WWE.com

On this week’s Monday Night Raw, Sting returned to a WWE ring to crash the unveiling of a Seth Rollins statue. Now Triple H has announced that Sting will face Rollins at Night of Champions with the WWE World Heavyweight Title on the line. While he may be 56 and a part-timer, I think he should win that match and win the title to boot. Here’s why…

Reason 1: It would legitimize Sting as a WWE competitor

Whichever way you look at it, Sting is a legend in the world of professional wrestling. The man was the face of WCW. He has career spanning over 25 years and 14 world titles. As the antidote to the nWo, he was a key factor in WCW winning the ratings war for almost two years over WWE between 1996 and 1998. This guy shouldn’t be treated like a joke anywhere he goes. But in WWE, there’s a very real risk Sting’s run could be a large blemish on his record. Almost a confirmation of the reasons why Sting held off for so many years from joining the WWE.

The strange decision was taken to put Triple H over against Sting in his debut WWE match at WrestleMania 31. If Sting loses two in a row as a part-timer, his stock will fall further and new WWE fans will think Sting is just that guy who loses all the time. Sting needs legitimacy so the new WWE fans realise why everyone made such a big deal of him when he turned up at Survivor Series 2014. He also needs legitimacy if the company plan on using him to draw 100,000 fans to Cowboy Stadium for WrestleMania 32. What better way to be legitimized than winning the WWE title?

Reason 2: It would help Seth Rollins

As champion, Seth Rollins has stalled as a character. He is now portrayed as a chump who simply can’t beat anyone without help. If Rollins loses to Sting, it can actually help him in a number of ways.

First off, this could kickstart the much speculated feud between Triple H and Seth Rollins. Since Triple H beat Sting at WrestleMania, Trips could be disappointed with Rollins failing to beat the Vigilante. Rollins could then point out that the only way Triple H beat Sting was with the help of De-Geriatric X. This could lead to babyface turn for Rollins which would get his career back on track and give him massive momentum. Remember how over Rollins was in the latter days of the Shield as the babyface? We could see that and a whole lot more if you joins the side of the good guys once again.

Or to go in completely the other direction, this feud could lead to Rollins finally legitimizing himself as a heel. If Rollins loses at Night of Champions, he could get his rematch for the title at Hell in a Cell. The steel structure of the cell helped Triple H establish himself as a ruthless S.O.B. and the company’s top heel when he battled with Mick Foley at No Way Out 2000. This match could bring out a similar mean streak from Rollins. Seth could break out everything from steel chairs to cinderblocks to utterly destroy the Icon and win his title back. This way he could actually win without assistance yet still be treated like a despicable heel. Except in this title reign, he would seem like a legitimate threat to the babyfaces he comes up against.

Reason 3: Ratings

It’s approaching the time of year where WWE’s RAW ratings usually end up in the toilet thanks to the NFL season starting up. Couple this with the disappointing RAW ratings in recent months and there’s even more pressure for WWE to deliver good ratings to ensure any future TV deals remain fruitful for the company’s investors. Giving Sting, a part timer, the World title would add an extra layer of intrigue to the WWE product. It also gives the product a level of urgency and fulfils the mantra "anything can happen in the WWE". Old WCW or wrestling fans in general might be intrigued by Sting’s WWE title reign that they could come back to the product. Overall, this can really help WWE’s ratings and given them a level of strength they so desperately need at this time of year. For the same reasons, it could also gain more subscribers to the WWE network or keep ones who were thinking of cancelling their subscription after a baffling SummerSlam finish.

Reason 4: It could set up a Sting vs John Cena match

Way back at SummerSlam 2014’s WWE 2K14 panel, Sting listed John Cena amongst the names of superstars he’d like to face in the WWE. A match between the face of WCW and the current face of WWE would definitely have a lot of interest and draw eyeballs to the product. It would also give Cena a fresh opponent who wouldn’t be a guaranteed win for the face that runs the place.

What does this have to do with Seth Rollins-Sting match? Well as Sean pointed out in the Cageside Live review of RAW, Sting could be out to correct the injustice of Cena being cheated out of his sixteenth world title at SummerSlam. This could lead Sting to actually offer John Cena the title after he won it. But in line with John Cena’s character, Cena wouldn’t accept any handouts. The only way he would want to win that sixteenth title would be in a fight with the champion. This could lead to historic match between Sting and Cena and Cena’s sixteenth title win could be done against a bone fide legend.

So there are just some reasons (I’m sure there’s more) why I think Sting should win the belt at Night of Champions. Maybe I’m just saying it as a mark who enjoyed flipping between WCW and WWE in the late 1990s and watching the guy’s work on Nitro. Still as far as I’m concerned, to paraphrase Triple H, Sting winning at Night Champions is "Best for Business".
