ROH TV, Week of 1/30/2015, Reactions

So a few of us here at Cageside Seats have begun enjoying Ring Of Honor in the recent weeks/months and we've started doing "live viewing parties" of sorts so I figured why the heck not try to put out a post for reactions to the TV we've all been watching.

Admittedly, I am not a seasoned ROH viewer so I apologize for my general lack of knowledge of their product and I'll apologize in advance should I get someone's name wrong or mess up an alliance or anything like that.

Match 1: The Briscoes vs The Kingdom (Taven and Bennett)

  • Loved the chaotic start to this one, seemed to fit the rivalry between the two groups.
  • While I don't enjoy Matt Taven, I sure do enjoy watching him get hit with a chair.
  • Some lady from TNA who I was not familiar with showed up. Other people seemed excited by this, which in turn excited me.
  • Are we heading toward some kind of mixed gender 6 person tag match? That's a real question because I have no idea how ROH likes to book these things.
Match 2 - ROH Prospect Tournament - Beer City Brawler vs uhhhh I'm going to call him Boston Guy
  • Was kinda grossed out by fatty at first but it turns out he can move around the ring a bit.
  • Howsabout that somersault from the ring apron??
  • Beer City got over with me due to the names of his moves (2 day hangover, Hair of the Dog)
  • Honestly, I don't remember too much else from this one aside from it felt like it went a bit long.
Match 3 - Alberto El Patron vs Christopher Daniels
  • First things first. I can count the amount of times I was excited to watch Alberto in WWE on zero fingers. Here though? I dunno, he just seemed more alive. More energetic. It was like watching the best possible version of "I love and respect my friend Ricardo" Alberto.
  • Being that I'm new, I still really love the novelty of the Code of Honor. First, I think it gives ROH a different feel from other orgs and I also think it gives the match a more "legitimate sporting event" feel. Second, gives a heel something to get heat with. Supposed to shake someone's hand and then don't. Booooooooooo.
  • I also dug that this was essentially face vs face to see who was better. Various parts of the crowd rooted and cheered for different guys but it didn't seem like they were rooting against anyone. Kinda cool
  • Annnnnd then it happened. Then I fell in love with the Greatest First Generation Wrestler, Jay Lethal. Now, my understanding of Lethal was limited prior to this. I'd seen a "woo off" with Flair in TNA on YouTube and I know he trained AJ Lee and dated her in the past. Aside from that? Clean slate. Holy cow, you guys... he might be my favorite heel now. Everything he did just had this really cool old school flair to it. He put Del Rio over something fierce all while getting himself heat. I could probably go on and on about his performance in the announce booth but I won't. I'll just say I'm really excited for him vs El Patron.
  • Match ended with the arm bar for Del Rio and then Lethal attacked bringing out Kaz and Daniels to make the save.
I don't have much of a basis for grading these shows as of yet, so I'll grade it as such: Absolutely a fun hour of pro wrestling.
