Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.
Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact; so remember to take it all with a grain of salt.
Rumors for the Day:
- After months on uncertainty, it now appears that Rey Mysterio will sign a new deal to remain with WWE. Mysterio has been stating his intention to remain in WWE in recent interviews and a deal is believed to be in the works. Injuries have greatly slowed Mysterio down in recent years, but he is still a popular superstar and could prove valuable in a limited role over the length of a new contract.
- It appears that the Shield will remain together for the time being, at least until WrestleMania XXX. They are currently embroiled in a feud with Kane, and it is expected they will take him on at WrestleMania XXX where Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins will turn on Shield-mate Roman Reigns. But who will join Kane in that match? There had been rumors that he could be joined by Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, but that no longer appears to be the case. Now, there is talk that NXT tag team champions, the Ascension, may be the ones on Kane's team for that match. The Ascension, Konnor and Viktor, would likely make a surprise debut at WrestleMania XXX.
- Speaking of tag teams at WrestleMania XXX, one reason that the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal may get bumped to the pre-show is because several top talents currently scheduled for the match will be pulled. It is being rumored now that the Usos will defend their tag team titles against the Real Americans (Jack Swagger and Cesaro) and Rybaxel (Ryback and Curtis Axel.) All four of whom are currently entered in the battle royal.
- Last week, (reportedly false) rumors came out that the AMC Network may be interested in buying out WWE as part of a new television deal, something Vince McMahon would likely never allow in his lifetime. Another network supposedly legitimately in the bidding for WWE's television rights is said to be WGN. The Chicago-based television company was one of the contending bidders the last time the television rights were up for sale in 2008. Still, most expect WWE to remain with NBC Universal when an announcement is made next month.
- One big reason that Carlos Colon will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year is because WWE is planning to purchase World Wrestling Council tape collection from Puerto Rico, where Colon was a major star. This footage will be placed on the WWE Network when it goes international next year and is expected to help bring in Spanish speaking viewers.
- In a bit of entertainment industry news, John Cena is reportedly in talks to join the cast of the upcoming Judd Apatow film Trainwreck. Cena is no stranger to films, with his most famous role as the titular character in 2006's The Marine. Filming would likely take Cena away from the ring for at least a little while. (For comparison, Kane missed two months last fall while away to film See No Evil 2.) Given Vince McMahon's enjoyment of mainstream media attention, it's unlikely that he will mind.
- In TNA news, Kurt Angle underwent successful knee surgery and could be back in action for TNA in April. His contract with TNA is reportedly up in September, and there has been a lot of talk that he could leave the company hoping to return to WWE.
