Can the Adam Rose Character Be Saved?

WWE.com

You gotta love Vince McMahon. He would love to put forward the notion that the WWE is a utopian business model where employees merely have to air their grievances to a compassionate creative team who would take their ideas into consideration before moving forward with ideas that would see the very cream of the company obtain said 'brass ring'.

And then you see a guy being paired up with a bunny. A freakin' bunny.

Now, there is no doubt that in a wrestling show there has to be those who are your main event talents, and those who are not. That's the nature of the business. One of the clever things about the Attitude Era was the fact that while you had guys like Stone Cold, the Rock, the Undertaker, Triple H and Mankind headlining the PPV's and TV Shows there was also gimmicks like Val Venis and the Godfather who were there to make the midcard more colourful and interesting.

The point I am making is that there should be a place in the WWE for guys like Adam Rose- guys who will never headline Wrestlemania but will keep the midcard busy.

So what has changed?

First off the WWE these days has a bigger roster with less titles to go around. There are three singles titles- the WWE Title, the US Title and the IC Title. In The Attitude Era there was no US Title but there was a European, Light Heavyweight and a Hardcore Title to feud over and make the midcard easier to justify. Overall less belts is a good thing but on the other hand it would be better to see Ryback and Kane fighting over a title than a errant spray of tomato sauce...

Secondly, put simply, WWE struggle with humour these days. I am not for one moment suggesting that the Attitude Era was a wondrous time when anything seemed possible, but the humour of today's WWE misses far more than it hits. Maybe this is due to a lack of consummate promo workers, maybe this is due to a more slick production that makes the jokes seem artificial or maybe it's simply that the Attitude Era dealt with risqué humour and now that it's PG-13 what the WWE are coming up with now seems juvenile and clunky (Jericho's promos on Raw this week were a good example of that). Whatever the reason, characters like Adam Rose are now being met with stony silence because there is little funny or interesting about them.

Finally, at a time when talented wrestlers like Emma, Titus O'Neill, Cesaro (yes Cesaro) and others cannot buy decent TV space each and every week, Rose and his goddamn bunny is being thrown in our faces with their leg humping schtick. And what is worse is that they seem to be building to some sort of weird feud between Rose and the Bunny, but nobody cares. A tumbleweed could be brought into the ring and it'd get more cheers.

So can you save it?

I think you can.

Firstly, Rose needs a heel turn. That much is self evident. He is simply not connecting as a face in the same way he did on NXT. This is somewhat understandable, as NXT has a vibe of a small indy-arena compared to the cavernous arenas of Raw, so a party atmosphere is going to be so much more difficult to replicate.

But Rose is inspired by this guy

And he has stepped away from the party atmosphere as well.

And as a matter of fact, there is no reason why Mr Brand here could not still be the inspiration behind the Rose character.

See, Brand has been advocating the notion of a New World Order (not that one) recently and advocating that capitalism and democracy in their current form do not work- a claim that has been questioned by many as slightly disingenuous by a man who clearly makes so much money from the system.

Whether this a valid claim or not doesn't really matter as far as we are concerned, because we can make it valid.

Let's say after the Bunny feud (because I guess we need to get through that travesty) Rose storms off in a huff and we don't see him for a couple of months. Then he comes back without the music or the groupies.

Instead he just walks to the ring with a mic and talks about he has had an epiphany about what is wrong with the world. He claims that we need to look deep inside ourselves to find a spiritual truth. Only then can we as a society move forward as equals- free from the evil bonds of money and other such things.

When Rose has matches scheduled, instead of fighting, he just questions the status quo and whether there is a need or desire to challenge for titles that are being held by an establishment that is so corrupt- essentially going out of his way to shit on the title and gaining massive heat in the process.

After a few weeks of this, we finally get someone ready to call him on his bluff- I see it being a newcomer from the NXT roster- maybe Sami Zayn or Adrian Neville who essentially calls him out on the fact that he is earning a great deal of money to essentially sit around while burying the title that was worn by the likes of Hogan, Savage, the Rock, Austin, et al. They earned the audience's respect by attempting to win the title whereas Rose has done nothing to do the same. This pushes Rose over the edge and he whacks said babyface with a chair- setting up a feud where the NXT debutant will go over and go on his way.
