John Cena and Randy Orton recently clashed to unify the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships. It was an encounter that was hyped up to an impossible standard. The match was fine, if forgettable, but more important was the dawn of the new apex title in WWE, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
This is a very good thing.
For one, it's less work for me to keep track of one championship, instead of two. More seriously, it adds further emphasis to the top man in the sport by removing any ambiguity or redundancy that the two separate championships may have created.
One wonders though, if such a momentous an occasion as unifying the titles would have been better saved for Wrestlemania? Oh well, sports are unpredictable and the competition will dictate the schedule, not petty politics and business concerns.
And now to answer an oft-asked question. Yes, the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship is now the sole world title in WWE and; therefore, bout with this new title at stake is worth 3 points to each participant, not 6 as was the case for the Orton/Cena title for title clash.
In that unique instance, two separate titles were at stake with the goal of unifying into one. Now, there is one championship that just happens to be physically manifested by two separate belts. It would come as no surprise if WWE were to return to using a single belt to adorn their top star in the near future, but that is mere window dressing.
Until further notice, the WWE has a unified world championship title and that is how we must treat it.
