Rumor Roundup (Jan. 29, 2014): Sting WWE Plans, Elimination Chamber Matches, and More!

Possible plans for Sting's first year in WWE revealed

Today's rumors: Sting has or is close to signing with WWE, possible plans for him over the next year if/when he signs, changes made to Raw script, where was CM Punk? Elimination Chamber matches being set up, and more!

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact; so remember to take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • There is still some pushing and shoving amongst the popular sources of wrestling rumors regarding whether or not Sting has signed a deal with WWE. As of this writing, it is being said that he either already has signed a deal or will sign a deal very soon, so it does look like Sting will be coming to WWE. It is also being said that Sting will not be rushed into a match at WrestleMania XXX, but could instead make some sort of cameo appearance to set up a future angle. It also sounds as though Sting would definitely be a part-time performer only, having only a limited number of appearances and matches over the course of the next year before likely headlining the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2015 and wrestling in a match at WrestleMania 31 in his home state of California. (Cue the endless Northern vs. Southern California debate...) Sting would also be used heavily to promote the WWE Network and its various WCW programming.
  • One match that is looking closer to reality for WrestleMania XXX is soon-to-be WWE Hall of Famer Ultimate Warrior taking on Ryback. It obviously wouldn't be a long or technical affair, but a token match to allow Warrior to run around the ring and charge up the fans one final time on the biggest stage in pro wrestling.
  • To those of you wondering why CM Punk was not on Monday night's Raw after having been eliminated from the Royal Rumble by Kane, wonder no more. One of the many rewrites to the Raw script pulled Punk from being in an Elimination Chamber qualifying match where he was to be screwed out of the win by Kane. Because there were so many other situations to deal with on the Royal Rumble fallout show, it was decided that Punk's story would be moved to next week's Raw where it would get a larger focus. The long-term plan still appears to be to set up a Punk vs. Kane match at Elimination Chamber to set up Punk vs. Triple H at WrestleMania XXX. (Just for comparison, the original script is also said to have had Cena, Sheamus, and Bryan in individual qualifying matches as well, but were lumped together into the three-man tag team match instead.)
  • Another match reportedly scheduled for Elimination Chamber is Batista vs. Alberto Del Rio. This match would be for Batista to shake off some ring rust while getting a win over a technically sound opponent who will make him look good in Del Rio. Like Punk above, this story was put on the back burner on this week's Raw, and will likely be revisited next week.
  • A third match reportedly being considered for Elimination Chamber is the long rumored Shield vs. Wyatt Family match. WWE officials have reportedly wanted this match ever since the Wyatt Family was called up from NXT last year. This match being a heel vs. heel affair also likely signals that it will be used to split Roman Reigns from the Shield to embark on his solo career as a face. (Smackdown spoiler: Triple H officially announces this match for Elimination Chamber.)
  • A Shield vs. Wyatt Family match would also mean that the rumored Intercontinental/United States title unification match would be off the table at Elimination Chamber. One quiet-for-now rumor is that the unification match may happen at WrestleMania XXX instead, potentially as a triple threat or fatal four way match in order to get more younger stars on the loaded card. (If I had to guess, I would say Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, Big E Langston, and Alexander Rusev would make for a great match.) If WWE officials choose to keep the titles separate, Reigns vs. Ambrose for the US title and Big E vs. Rusev for the IC title could also be possibilities, though one would almost certainly take place on the pre-show.
