WWE world heavyweight champion Randy Orton put his title on the line against John Cena tonight (Sun., Jan. 26, 2014) at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) in what was billed as a straight up singles match, one fall (or submission) to a finish.
And thanks to an assist from Bray Wyatt and Family, "The Viper" is still the champ.
This was your typical WWE main event type match. Plenty of kicking, plenty of punching, some rest spots, and dead tired selling before going into the false finishes to really give it that "epic" feel.
They even traded finishes, with Orton using the AA and Cena using the RKO.
The crowd wasn't buying it. Actually, they went business for themselves as soon as the match started, chanting for Daniel Bryan, then Randy Savage, then Y2J, and everything else under the sun. They booed when Cena went into his patented "five moves of doom". In fact, they seemed to boo near falls if only because it meant the match was continuing.
Yeah, it was like that.
Finally, after what felt like forever, Cena had Orton in the STF when the Wyatt Family came out and caused a distraction. This gave Orton an opening to hit one more RKO to end the match.
After, Wyatt nailed Cena with Sister Abigail but not before proclaiming "behold the creators of the new world".
The crowd showered him with "YES" chants for it.
Yep.
