Today's rumors: Out-of-date advertising or a potential spoiler for after Royal Rumble? More on Intercontinental and U.S. title unification, WWE gives a pity victory to a Diva, and more!

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact; so remember to take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • Local advertising for upcoming wrestling events is frequently a source for generating a lot of rumors. Often times, the advertising is simply out of date, having been filmed months in advance of the event. But occasionally, the advertising will give us a sneak peak at the plans headed forward (hello Batista.) This time around, local advertising for house shows the week after Royal Rumble later this month is promoting matches between "WWE champion Randy Orton and World Heavyweight Champion John Cena." It would be easy to dismiss these advertisements as having been filmed before the titles were unified at last month's TLC pay per view, but there are few points that make this something to pay attention to. First, rumors following the unification suggested that WWE was leaving the door open for the titles to be separated once again down the line. Initially, WWE officials indicated that the WWE Title would be used exclusively and that the World Heavyweight "big gold belt" title would be retired. However, current champion Randy Orton has still been carrying around both title belts since becoming champion. Second, it was announced earlier this week that Orton and Cena would have a rematch for the titles at Royal Rumble. It's possible, through some screwy finish, that the titles could somehow be split back up then. Finally, Triple H teased a potentially huge Elimination Chamber match in February, and one way to make it an even bigger event would be to reunify the titles there with only one champion leaving the chamber. While most are still leaning toward assuming this advertising is simply out of date, there is just enough here to make this a situation worth keeping in mind as we head toward Royal Rumble.
  • Speaking of title unifications, WWE apparently still has it in mind to eventually unify the United States and Intercontinental titles. When the WWE and World Heavyweight titles were first unified, the rumors backstage were that WWE would push the Intercontinental title into the clear #2 spot while keeping the US title as a tertiary singles title. Now it would seem that WWE is considering a unification of these titles afterall, most likely at WrestleMania XXX. Big E Langston, who is said to be in line for a big push in 2014 as WWE tries to develop him into a main event caliber African-American babyface, will likely still be Intercontinental champion, while it is currently being rumored that Roman Reigns, another guy set for a "monster" push in 2014, could enter the event as the US champion, likely winning it from Deam Ambrose during the inevitable breakup of the Shield.
  • If you thought it was a bit odd that WWE would give the pinfall victory to Aksana in Monday's 10-Divas tag team match, you're not alone. It is being said that someone realized backstage that Aksana did not have a single televised win in all of 2013. Being someone WWE officials are said to like as a potential manager (there have been some very quiet rumors/speculation of her managing Alexander Rusev when he is called up to the main roster,) they wanted her to have a victory, so she got one on the very last WWE television show of the year.
  • While he won't be at WrestleMania XXX, the Rock's movie career continues to go swimmingly. He tweeted out on New Year's Eve that he had a meeting with the CEO of Warner Bros. regarding his potential involvement in a future DC Comics movie. What movie and which character they discussed were not revealed.
