Though it was rumored for a while, then quite obviously going to happen, it didn't become officially official until last night with the airing of SmackDown on SyFy: Brock Lesnar will return to the ring for his next match against Big Show at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) scheduled for Sun., Jan. 26, 2014, at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
From the WWE.com preview:
On Jan. 26 at Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar returns to a WWE ring for a fight, though his opposition will not be any ordinary Superstar but rather a true giant in the form of the 7-foot, 425-pound Big Show. Lesnar's advocate, Paul Heyman, accepted a challenge issued by The World's Largest Athlete on SmackDown, clearing the path for a colossal fight between arguably WWE's two most intimidating warriors.
The turbulent Lesnar surprisingly reappeared on the last Raw of 2013 to not only name himself the No. 1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but to also brutalize Mark Henry - a punishing act he repeated the following week, fracturing Henry's arm and dislocating his elbow with the Kimura Lock. Moments later, Big Show stormed the ring and made The Beast Incarnate look uncharacteristically human, tossing the former mixed martial artist's nearly 300-pound frame across the ring.
According to the latest rumors, this match is simply a buffer for Lesnar challenging Undertaker's streak at WrestleMania 30. Even if that turns out to be the case, there's no reason to think this won't be an entertaining showcase.
After all, it's a HOSS FIGHT between two good (Show) to sometimes great (Lesnar) workers with a history together. And that history is filled with fun bouts.
Here's to hoping they add another one.
The updated Royal Rumble match card and line-up:
