Wrestler Wrankings™: 2013-14 Season, Week 22

In today's WWE, business(ah) is booming. But is it coming at the expense of the inherent sporting nature of professional wrestling?

WWE is on one of the most entertaining and profitable rolls is has enjoyed since the heyday of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

Business is booming largely because company COO Triple H has made a series of decisions that has stirred fan interest in the WWE product to a boiling point.

This week, the business-first mentality included the shocking termination of Cody Rhodes, a wrestler just entering his prime.

Much like raising or lowering taxes or the minimum wage, sudden sweeping changes such as those being instituted by Triple H can only be a temporary fix. Eventually the market will correct and you'll be left with the same economic issues you once had, now compounded with the the unintended consequences of monkeying with the system. The hope would be that the fleeting benefits enjoyed due to the capricious changes were worth it.

And so it is with WWE. Cody Rhodes was fired because he lost a match against one of the most fearsome wrestlers on the roster, in WWE Champion Randy Orton. Furthermore, Cody appeared to be on the verge of defeating his former mentor until he suffered an unfortunate knee injury. This is not the type of performance that typically lends to an immediate release.

Triple H's justification for his severe action was that there is no place for losers in the WWE. While I prefer winners as well, it must be understood that professional wrestling is a zero sum game. In nearly every instance, there must be a loser, in addition to a winner. If the penalty for losing is an instant firing then the entire Federation would be destroyed in a matter of weeks.

Let's hope that Triple H and his cadre of cronies have a greater vision in store for WWE and aren't just raising the tax on losing.
