Fall Brawl was World Championship Wrestling's (WCW) annual September pay-per-view (PPV) event and a showcase for the beloved War Games match, a gimmick fans are still hoping will return sometime sooner or later. But the event wasn't just about War Games, and featured more than a few significant moments during its eight year run.
That included the show that took place on this date in history (Sept. 18, 1994) at the Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
In one contest on the card, Cactus Jack (Mick Foley) lost a "Loser Leaves Town" match against Kevin Sullivan. This signaled the end of Foley's time with the company as he would move on to much bigger and much better things with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and later the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
Later in the night, "Stunning" Steve Austin was awarded the United States championship when Ricky Steamboat was unable to compete due to a back injury suffered in a previous match between the two. In fact, Steamboat would be fired not long after this and retire from active wrestling altogether.
Austin would participate in an impromptu match against Jim Duggan. He lost the U.S. title to old "Hacksaw" in about five seconds.
There was also a memorable War Games match in the main event pitting Team Rhodes (Dusty Rhodes, Dustin Rhodes, Nasty Boys) vs. The Stud Stable (Terry Funk, Arn Anderson, Bunkhouse Buck, Col. Robert Parker). The mere mention of it simply makes me think of the brilliance of Dusty during the promo you'll see below, as well as the above matches.
