We knew this was the direction they were headed and now WWE has made it official during tonight's episode of Monday Night Raw in Green Bay: Cody Rhodes will take on Damien Sandow in a singles match at the SummerSlam pay-per-view (PPV) on Sun., Aug. 18, 2013, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
But the Money in the Bank briefcase guaranteeing a shot at the world heavyweight championship, as originally rumored, will not be on the line.
The WWE.com preview:
True friends will always be there no matter what, looking out for each other and offering support whenever it is needed. Of course, every so often, a friend will also tip over a ladder to cost his cohort a chance at the World Heavyweight Title, leading his fallen compadre to turn around and throw that World Title opportunity into the Gulf of Mexico.
As pie-in-the-sky as all that might sound, it's no longer just an intellectual exercise. For, following the complete implosion of Team Rhodes Scholars, Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow are gearing up to rip each other apart at SummerSlam.
I'm not sure a simple grudge match is enough to get this thing over, but the feud has been put together very well and both men have performed wonderfully within in, most notably Sandow's "I CAN'T SWIM" segment on SmackDown a few weeks ago.
Then again, the singles match can be the first in the program and Night of Champions could house the gimmick match where the blue briefcase is on the line.
Just a thought.
