It has been an a calling card for all wrestling fans over the age of ten, an undeniable claim that "I the fan know more and will not tolerate this bullshit". Cena Sucks!! Cena Sucks!! You can't wrestle!! Per wikipedia the rampant chants and association with Cena's lack of wrestling acumen begun around the time he feuded with Triple H in '06 culminating with a highly memorable affair with RVD at One Night Stand '06. At this pay per view with a die hard ECW fanbase (If Cena Wins We Riot) the shift was complete. Cena was declared wrestling fan enemy #1. He was the reason for all things wrong with the E. New talent was being buried because of him, the product became PG because of him, wrestlers could suck and get major pushes over better talent because of him, it was endless and easily discreditable but nonetheless it persisted.
Over-sized humans have been synonymous with WWE since Vince Mcmahon took over the company from his father. Hulk Hogan a gloriously average worker had championed the greatest expansion in wrestling history and is still one of the very few performers to be both one of the biggest heels in the industry and it's biggest face. Hogan is notorious for his backstage maneuvering and this was before the dawn of internet smarkism, is it truly possible Cena would be holding down the immense talents of Chris Masters, John Morrison, Bobby Lashley and any other superstar who has come and gone without even a hint of him doing it? Or is it possible he was just hand selected by Vince to always win his matches? The PG era that Cena has reigned over is no different than the one Hogan had in the 80s. Big muscular all-American hero over comes the odds and preaches the good morals and good virtues of life. It is almost undeniable the PG era is a reflection of the Benoit murders, concussion syndrome, and Linda's failed senate runs more so than anything else, but logic has no reason in the wrestling world and Cena was to blame.
He can't wrestle, His promos suck. Admit-tingly so John Cena delivers boring uninspired promos but one has to wonder if he is doing the best he can given his predicament. The PG era has put hang-cuffs on all it's superstars but Cena being the face of this new era has been even more restricted than most. CM punk isn't performing record breaking make-a-wish foundation trips, hes not on the cover of kids cereal boxes(I'm an adult but I still love Fruity pebbles). It is a lot more difficult to come off edgy and appreciated by a mature crowd when you are doing your best to not alienate the little ones. Punk is not understood by kids. Why? Because he's talking to mature fans who have roughly 20+ years of wrestling watching experience. The 10 year olds don't have that, they are still under the impression of good vs bad, no gray no intricate middle ground and more importantly they still believe good needs to beat bad in order for the world to work. They are not jaded by the world or predicting how a storyline is going to play out two months in advance. Be honest you miss the days where wrestling was a fun to no end and the end of summerslam provided a lot of that to many of you.
Can Cena wrestle? Have you seen his matches with Punk, Bryan, Jbl(I quit match), HBK, and Edge. The man has put on classics. It doesn't matter thou he only has great matches with other great superstars he doesn't elevate wrestlers with less in-ring ability. Off the top of my head I am able to name only a few champions who are able to elevate their competition. Hart, Flair, Angle, Punk, Bryan, Savage, and HBK. The Undertaker doesn't elevate his competition neither did Austin or the Rock. He isn't the best but shouldn't be martyred with you can't wrestle chants as it is clearly not true anymore.
Cena by all accounts is a fairly respectable and upstanding person and in the world of professional wrestling that is saying something. Everyone can speak about stories that place characters in a horrible light. The industry has it's fair share of murders, rapists,wife-beaters and even pedophiles. Wreslting fans cheer and boo by what happens on TV but it is slightly unfortunate that the man who is considered one of the more approachable superstars is the one who gets the most hate. Hell CM Punk by most accounts is nothing short of a dick outside the ring.
I personally as a wrestling fan am over the hate on Cena, he has done more than enough to earn his stripes from me. He has worked through injuries, endured heavy criticism, improved his in-ring work, been respectable out of the ring, and has continually shown/said how he wants nothing more than to be a wrestler. Is Cena an all-time wrestling great? No. Is he a charismatic personality on the mic? LOL. Does he have my respect? Yes.
