World Championship Wrestling (WCW), during its run from 1988 to 2001, had its share of ups and downs under the rule of various leaders ranging from the utterly incompetent to the easily influenced (in all the wrong ways). This led to a lot of wild and wacky scenarios that included such insanity as the Black Scorpion, Robocop, and David Arquette as world heavyweight champion.
But there were also some legitimate feel good moments that will forever be etched in the annals of pro wrestling lore. One of those instances occurred on this date in history (Aug. 2, 1992) when Ron Simmons defeated Vader to win the WCW heavyweight championship.
Simmons was the first of two black men to do so with the company. Today, WWE recognizes him as the first black world heavyweight champion in pro wrestling history, though there are many who would refute such a claim.
Nonetheless, it was an incredible moment that came about thanks to Jake Roberts injuring Sting, who was supposed to challenge for the belt that night. This led to Bill Watts holding a raffle to determine who would step in for the Stinger, which was won by Simmons.
The match itself is good but not great. The crowd and the reaction to Simmons actually winning the belt is what makes it so damn special. He described the feeling later by saying, "I'll never experience that again. That's an emotion that I can't put into words that you really only get once. Unmatched by any feelings I've ever had."
Simmons would drop the strap back to Vader five months later and his run is widely regarded as unmemorable but his actually winning the belt was a historic moment that you can watch below:
