Mixed Tag Team Match
AJ Lee & Big E Langston vs. Kaitlyn & Dolph Ziggler
It wasn't so long ago that the participants in this match were so happy together. Former and current best friends. Bad romance. It all leads to a messy situation in mixed tag action on Sunday, August 18th.
The Road to SummerSlam
Dolph Ziggler was World Heavyweight Champion (WHC). Big E Langston had his back, and AJ Lee had his love. But a stray kick from Jack Swagger and what seemed like a storybook second run with the second most prestigious belt in WWE all went horribly wrong.
The man he had cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on, Alberto Del Rio, took it very personally and reclaimed his belt by targeting Ziggler's aching head. Not only did those actions make him an ex-champion once again, but his desire to honorably reclaim it drove a wedge between he and his occasionally unhinged lady love.
AJ had herself just earned her first Divas title, defeating her former best friend Kaitlyn. Most of the focus was on keeping that belt - she even enlisted her new best friend and Dolph's bodyguard/mentee Langston in a catfishing scheme to humiliate the Hybrid Diva - but she did devote some time to helping her Zigglypuff. Unfortunately, her attempt to help cost Ziggler his rematch at Money in the Bank and his good guy streak didn't include not kicking Lee to the curb like her former WWE boyfriends had.
Now, after weeks of interfering in one another's matches, bickering and flirting... SummerSlam host The Miz has decided all of these issues should be settled at the same time, in the same ring.
What's at stake?
Career standing. Langston is a former NXT champion and someone the company should have big plans for, but honestly, the sooner he extricates himself from this storyline, the better it will be for his long-term prospects. Ziggler has fallen precipitously down the card since his feel-good moment cashing in the night after WrestleMania. It's hard to see where he gets a spark out of this match, but stranger things have happened.
On the women's side, the long-running Divas title feud has taken a backseat to reality show ratings, and it may only be a matter of time before one of the stars of Total Divas is also champ. There's also the matter of former champ Layla, who recently turned to help AJ defend her belt against Kaitlyn.
AJ has proven to be talented and savvy enough to stay on television, but what's next is a very big question mark for everyone else in this match.
