I've always thought it interesting on how people get either, into wrestling, or back into wrestling, and this past Sunday I got to witness it first hand with one of my best friends. So I thought I would share our experience with the rest of you for those who are interested.
Just some back story, I watch almost every WWE PPV by myself, and since the breakup, every show too. None of my friends watch, or even like the product, but Its never really bothered me though. I feel like its something of my own, and that everybody else is just missing out. Besides, I have my CSS family here, and over the past year I have built great friendships with a lot of you.
Well anyway, So my best friend Ben comes over, because I had originally planned on watching, but planned over it last minute due to some things we had to take care of together. We got it done faster than expected and so he stuck around to watch it with me. The last time he had seen anything was some vauge rememberances of the attitude era and WCW. Infact some of the questions that followed, gave me the impression that he didnt know the diference between the two companys. My first thought was, "Wow thats cool. If he is as big on history as I am, (and is) then he would have the greatest time figuring out 2 decades of back story" When I finally turned it on, It was Axel vs The Miz. Nothing special was happening so the questions began, Is "Kane still here"? "Whos this. whys that," you know, that sort of stuff. I thought, geeze, this isnt really the kind of match you would want to show somebody for their first time. Thank goodness 9 minutes and 19 seconds later, it was over. Next up, Divas match, all that came out of that was he thought Kaitlyn was a lot hotter than A.J. My friend indeed. Now it gets good. "Break the walls doooooowwwwnnnnn!!" Immediately he said "Chris Jericho?!?!" and I think that was the hook right there. He knew who this guy was. VS Ryback? It was actually a great match, and I know it was great here. I could tell he was into it now, and he wanted Jericho to win. He settled for the disappointment, but I knew he was going to lose. Next up was ADR vs Ziggler, and holy crap that was a great match. We were both on the edges of our seats now. Back and Forth, holy crap, He was rooting for Ziggler to win. Then AJ comes down and ruins the match. To me, I knew they were doing the storyline breakup right away, but to him it ruined a 5 star match and just made him hate AJ that much more. He yelled "That little bitch!" Now he is getting emotionally invested into the show. Which is good. Cena VS Henry, and you have to realize, Ben has to idea to any of the back story and is all new and fresh in his eyes. We had the conversation that this was the typical "Hulk vs Andre" match and even he knew Cena would over come and finally defeat this giant monster. By the time the second failed AA he said, "Hes going to find a way to win, you just watch." I smiled and agreed. Pretty interesting on how easy it was to predict that winner, even to someone like him. Now the greatest part. See, we missed the first blue MITB match so by the time the Red came on, I had informed him how it works and what the point of it was. He thought it was a neat concept, but the match, Holy Crap. He remembered RVD and drew a liking to him. He though his performance was great, and even I thought so as well. RVD was great. He drew a liking to CM Punk and Daniel Bryan and ABSOLUTELY hated everything about Sheamus and wanted him nowhere near the ladder. It was a really tense match, and we both were at the edge of our seat cheering for Daniel Bryan like it was the last 2 minutes of the Super Bowl. and then Axel comes down, "Who the fuck is this?" he screams. "Yeah Punk! Get him" Punk slowly climbing the ladder, Ben gets madder, "Get up there! Come on get up there! Why is he taking so goddamn long? Get up there!!!" By this time, emotions are running way out of control, then Heyman smashes him with the ladder, "Why the hell did he do that? I thought they were friends?" (I filled him in just a little bit before the match). Then Orton grabs the breifcase, who like Sheamus he hated and wanted nothing to do with the breifcase. He wasn't nearly as worried about the outcome of the match as he was all this drama that unfolded just seconds before.
After the MITB we BBQed some steaks, and he was still talking about it and wanted to watch the CM Punk DVD, because to no real surprise to me, he had grew a liking to the man. We watched the whole DVD and he was way into it and it made him understand what had happened earlier in the night was just that much more impactful. and he just got a great look inside the business, and what all goes on. I am taking Ben to the Raw house show here in Portland, the friday before Summerslam, and what a time its going to be, to see it in real life.
A new fan was born that night, and what a real treat it was for him to experience all of that. It was a very interesting experience for me as well. Right now is a great time to be a fan of our sport, and witnessing this made me do a lot of thinking. Well I hope you found this as interesting as I did, and feel free to leave any comments you wish. Thanks for reading guys.
