While his tag team partner in Team Hell No, Daniel Bryan, was busy trying to win the tag team titles with Randy Orton, Kane was locking horns with Dean Ambrose with the United States championship on the line at tonight's (Sun., June 16, 2013) WWE Payback pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
This may have represented the first truly big singles match of Ambrose's WWE career, at least as a member of the main roster. He got a big pop on his way out, too, but proceeded to turn in a less than stellar performance in what amounted to a cool down match after two good encounters to kick off the show.
It also featured a terrible finish.
After a mostly plodding affair, the two battled to the outside. Kane teased a choke slam to the Spanish announce table but Ambrose countered with a kick to the gut and followed with a DDT. He quickly jumped back into the ring and with the count already at 8, simply waited for the referee to get to 10 while Kane was still selling on the outside.
And, just like that, Ambrose retained the title via count out.
