On This Date in WWE History (May 8):Chris Jericho defends the Intercontinental title three times on Raw

Embroiled in a bitter feud with the McMahon family, Chris Jericho was forced to defend his belt three times. In one night.

Since debuting in WWE the year prior, Chris Jericho was making waves in his new promotion. After years and years of playing second fiddle in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) to the likes of Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Sting, Jericho was finally given the proverbial ball and didn't only run with it, he darn near sprinted.

It wouldn't be until 2001 when he won a world title -- becoming the first Undisputed Champion in WWE history -- but he bided his time until then feuding with the likes of Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Triple H.

During one of what would end up being nine reigns as IC champ, Jericho ran afoul the McMahon family and in particular, Stephanie who had -- storyline-wise recently married "The Game." Triple H and his crew, D-Generation X, were handing a beating to The Rock on an episode of SmackDown and Jericho jumped in to help "The Great One."

On the following Raw, the McMahon regime laid down the gauntlet for the "Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah."

First, he would defend his title against Angle. If he managed to remain champion after that, The Big Show would be opponent number two. And if by some miracle, Jericho held onto the belt after those two matches, Benoit would be his third opponent.

Check out some of the action from that night right here:
