Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.
Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact; so remember to take it all with a grain of salt.
Rumors for the Day:
- As World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler continues to miss time due to the severe concussion he suffered two weeks ago at the hands of Jack Swagger, the question of if or when WWE would strip him of his title continues to be asked. According to the current rumors, this won't happen unless Ziggler has yet to be cleared by the time Payback rolls around in June. The original plan seems to have been for Ziggler to retain at Extreme Rules and then have Alberto Del Rio earn his, pun fully intended, payback at Payback to win the title back. Whether that plan changes now that Ziggler has missed so much time is unknown.
- If you watched last night's (May 27) Raw, you saw Chris Jericho challenging CM Punk (via Paul Heyman) to a match at next month's Payback pay per view from Punk's hometown of Chicago, IL. This is the plan, at least as far as WWE is concerned. However, there still hasn't been any official word from Punk about his return. The general consensus seems to be that if WWE wants Punk there, he will be there. But things could get interesting if the rift between Punk and the organization is as tenuous as the rumors have indicated.
- We mentioned yesterday that with John Cena out of action, Shawn Michaels was making appearances at this past weekend's house shows instead. Well, for the SmackDown branded shows, the headlining act was Sheamus vs. Wade Barrett for the Intercontinental title. This is believed to be a one-off match and will not have long term ramifications for Sheamus, Barrett, or the IC title. Instead, Barrett appears to be headed for a three way feud with Miz and Fandango, which, if previous rumors hold true, will end up seeing Fandango winning his first title.
- Speaking of Sheamus, it appears that he and Randy Orton may be forming a tag team with the intention of challenging the Shield's Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins for the tag team titles. This team-up will also likely lead to the previous rumors of a heel turn for one of them followed by a match at SummerSlam in August.
