Del Rio! Show! Main Event! On Main Event!
When Main Event first debuted, it offered the promise of great matches we haven't seen before. CM Punk vs. Sheamus, champion vs. champion, in a long form, excellently fought match. Yeah, we might have been able to see it on Monday Night Raw, but it certainly wasn't going to be given the time or attention it deserved. Main Event was going to be the pro wrestling fan's crown jewel.
Then something odd started happening. We started seeing repeat encounters. We started seeing performances that simply didn't measure up to the show's high expectations. We started seeing angles take center stage instead of the matches themselves.
It was not the turn most fans wanted to see.
Tonight we will see World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio take on the former champion, The Big Show. Which in and of itself could be a good thing. The problem is that we just saw a trilogy of great matches between these men, a Last Man Standing Match on the Jan. 11 episode of SmackDown, a Last Man Standing Rematch atRoyal Rumble (Jan. 27), and the blowoff at Elimination Chamber (Feb. 17).
There is simply no way tonight will be able to live up to the expectation created by those battles. Maybe we will be pleasantly surprised by the time the show is over, though.
WWE would be better served using this hour of prime time television for something new and different.
In! Tonight's! Action! Bullet! Points! Mini! Spoilers!
Note: all matches are based on reports from last night's (Feb. 19) taping. The endings will not be given away, but there may be slight spoilers. The card is always subject to change.
- Jimmy and Jey Usos will take on 2/3rds of 3MB in Drew McIntyre and Heath Slater.
- "Mr. Hollywood" Wade Barrett will face "Mr. South Africa" Justin Gabriel.
