Buster Douglas knocks out Mike Tyson in February 1990, then takes his place in the WWF Main Event to referee Hulk Hogan vs. Macho King.
Sometimes the best laid plans ...
Boxing legend "Iron" Mike Tyson found a spot in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Fame last year (2012), thanks to his involvement during the "Attitude Era", that culminated as special ring enforcer for WrestleMania XIV.
Tyson's program came just over eight years after he was initially booked to appear as special guest referee at The Main Event, on February 23, 1990, in a bout between Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage for the WWF Championship.
Unfortunately for Tyson, he was knocked out for the first time in his career when James Douglas finished him earlier that month in Japan. Vince McMahon, an opportunist if ever there was one, called an audible and had "Buster" fill the role.
Just like Shawn Michaels did the second time around, the "Macho King" would get pasted after losing the bout and blaming it on the visiting pugilist. But for my money, the best part of the entire angle was watching Savage blow his stack and taunt Douglas while Jesse "The Body" Ventura commentated.
Take a look:
Not sure what happened on that first punch, but the second one certainly did the job.
