Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we will be taking a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.
Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact; so remember to take it all with a grain of salt.
Stipulation for the World Heavyweight Championship Match
at WrestleMania 29?
With Royal Rumble winner John Cena set to square off with the WWE Champion, most likely The Rock, at WrestleMania 29, the title that the WWE brass wants us to believe is equal, looks like it will be overshadowed at a major pay-per-view (PPV), yet again.
As hard as it may be to believe, the World Heavyweight Championship is, in kayfabe terms, on the same footing as the WWE Championship. However, it feels like it has been quite a few years since it was actually treated in the same regard as its more prestigious kin.
WWE creative is apparently aware of this, and has been kicking around ideas to set the World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 29 apart. Though there is obviously no way it would ever bump "The Rock vs. John Cena II" from the top of the card, effort is being put in to at least make the match feel like it could be a WrestleMania main event.
First, the winner of Sunday's (Feb. 17) chamber match at Elimination Chamber will earn a match for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 29. Additionally, Dolph Ziggler is still lurking with his "Money in the Bank" briefcase, primed to cash in should the champion show any moment of weakness.
So why bring this up? Well, with the other rumored "main event" level matches on the WrestleMania 29 card consisting of all one-on-one matchups (Cena/Rock, Punk/Undertaker, HHH/Brock Lesnar,) one idea to set the World Heavyweight Championship match apart, is to turn it into a triple-threat or even a fatal-four-way match. The match would likely involve, at minimum, current champion Alberto Del Rio, the winner of the elimination chamber match, and Dolph Ziggler.
Regardless of who it involves or how it comes together, the World Heavyweight Championship scene definitely needs a boost, and there does seem to be a at least a few ideas out there as far as how to do it.
Other Rumors for the Day:
- It is looking more and more likely The Shield will be wrestling on free TV following Elimination Chamber. The group has been wrestling in tag team action at house shows for several weeks, and now, they are being advertised for future televised events, including the SmackDown taping from Albany, NY (Mar. 5).
- While he was not backstage for Monday's (Feb. 11) edition of Raw, and definitely didn't appear on-screen, it is believed that The Undertaker was in Nashville to meet with Vince McMahon. His status is still up in the air for WrestleMania 29, but it is believed that he will wrestle a final match at some point.
- As you may be already be aware, former independent wrestling star and latest WWE signee El Generico made his debut at an NXT house show on Wednesday night (Feb. 13.) While he was wearing his standard ring attire, he was never mentioned by name. WWE generally makes it a point to own the rights to the names of their Superstars, so it is still possible that El Generico will have a new name, even if he keeps his standard look.
- Vince McMahon is said to already have a generalized plan in place for what he wants to happen at WrestleMania 30. While the exact details are obviously subject to change, it is said that he has been working towards this plan since last year's WrestleMania 28.
