Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we will be taking a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.
Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact; so remember to take it all with a grain of salt.
Two Chamber Matches on Sunday?
WWE Elimination Chamber, taking place this Sunday (Feb. 17) at 8 p.m. ET from the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, LA, is inching closer with each passing second. Currently, there is only one namesake "chamber" match on the card; the one to decide the challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 29.
This has fans of chamber matches in an uproar. With a 6-man tag team match (The Shield vs. John Cena, Ryback, and Sheamus) also on the card, many fans are wondering why that one isn't taking place in the chamber.
When this question was first raised last week, backstage WWE sources quickly answered it. An elimination chamber match, using similar rules to the old WCW War Games match, would mean 5 of the hottest stars in the WWE being pinned or submitted in order to be eliminated.
This, coupled with the fact that Monday night's (Feb. 11) Raw came and went with no stipulation being added to the match, seemed to put the kibosh on any additional chamber matches being added to the Elimination Chamber card.
However, earlier this week, a tweet from Ryback promising to meet the Shield "in" the chamber Sunday brought some renewed hope to the situation. (The tweet was later removed and replaced with one promising to meet the Shield "at" Elimination Chamber.)
In addition, the final page of WWE's article on the "10 Most Vicious Moments" in Elimination Chamber history contains the line:
"With two Elimination Chamber Matches slated for this Sunday, Feb. 17, who’s to say what horror awaits the 12 Superstars when they enter Satan’s Prison?"
A last minute stipulation is still a possibility at the event itself. All we can do now is stay tuned to the situation.
Other Rumors for the Day:
- The likely main event at WrestleMania 29, The Rock vs. John Cena II for the WWE Title, is basically a lock at this point to the surprise of no one. However, there were at least some backstage discussions about possible alternatives for each superstar over the past couple of months. In the end, it was decided that the match would go on as expected because no other matchup would make as much money as this one.
- Though his rumored match with CM Punk at WrestleMania 29 is still in jeopardy due to his physical state, it sounds as though the Undertaker won't be done whether he wrestles there or not. It is believed he would like to have a final match at some point, most likely WrestleMania 30, before retiring. The word on the street is that Taker has been training in preparation for a match this year, but the biggest hang up is that Taker needs to feel like he can put on a quality match, and he may not feel that way this year.
- The early favorite to become the name of the Brodus Clay/Tensai tag team? "Monsters of Funk."
- In TNA news, Bully Ray's quadriceps injury is apparently only a "slight tear" and he is expected to work through it while rehabbing on the side.
