Some of the consequences of me getting back into wrestling in the last four months have led to me re-watching old wrestling pay per views. In my endlessly empty days (thank to my cut hours at work), I have been watched every WWF/E PPV from the 1995 Royal Rumble to the 1998 King of the Ring. The other day, I decided to also watch some old WCW stuff. In the last two days, I've watched the 1997 Fall Brawl, 1997 Halloween Havoc and 1997 World war 3.
I bring this up, because I have come to the conclusion that the WCW (even then) was pretty bad. That isn't to say that I think all their talent was shit, because it wasn't. I will always love Goldberg, Sting, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and the Cruiserweights. However, the PPV quality was so inferior to that of the WWF ones at the time, that I am am not sure how anyone (including myself) was more willing to watch WCW than WWF.
Don't get me wrong, from 1996-2000, I watched way more Raw and WWF PPVs than anything WCW put out, but I really remembered myself as more of a WCW guy (to be fair, I think I enjoyed the ECW best of all). Maybe it's because I remember that stretch from the end of WM14 to KOTR 98 as shit (though in retrospect it isn't any worse than some of the bogus main events WCW threw together from the three aforementioned WCW PPVs), maybe it's because I remember the mid-carders in the WCW with more fondness (though I love Al Snow and Val Venis way more than the Disco Infernos and Scotty Riggs' of the world). Probably some of the problem is that there are no packages before matches to tell me what the backstory is, and unless I want to watch every single Nitro from that time, I just have to base my opinion on the match itself.
The saddest part is that the WCW had enough talent to really be even better. I watched the Rey Mysterio/Eddie Guerrero Halloween Havoc 97 match, and to be frank, it's one of the best matches ever. However, then you follow that up with "Mango" McMichael/Alex Wright with Debra being ringside, and you suddenly realize that you're watching shit.
I write this partially to bitch about the quality, partially to say that you could see the writing on the walls in reference to the future of the WCW, but I write mostly to vent my sadness about my childhood being torn away by these re-watches. At the very least, I can just pop on the good stuff from the WWF/E.
I also wanted to get some opinions from people who remembered this era of WCW/WWF/ECW wrestling. I hope you guys share.
