On this date in WWE history: A Triple (H) dose of 'The Game' at No Mercy 2007

If one didn't know any better, one might think "No Mercy 2007" was nothing more than a vanity project for the notoriously big ego of then active WWE superstar Triple H.

During the summer and fall months of 2007, Randy Orton was feuding with John Cena over the WWE championship. He unsuccessfully challenged for the belt multiple times but thanks to a torn pectoral muscle suffered by Cena on an episode of Monday Night Raw just six days away from the No Mercy pay-per-view (PPV) event, the title was vacated.

Vince McMahon announced a new champion would be crowned at the show and that's exactly what happened on this date in history (Oct. 7, 2007).

The night started with McMahon simply awarded Orton the belt. This drew a ton of heat from the live audience in Chicago but they quickly changed their tune when Triple H's music hit and he came out to challenge Orton to an impromptu match.

After some goading, it was booked and went down right then and there.

That's one hell of a pop for a Triple H title victory.

Orton, stunned, was left to walk off and wonder how the hell he could have been champion just to lose it to the same guy who took it from him the first time he won a major title all the way back in 2004.

Heading into the night's show, "The Game" was scheduled to take on Umaga in a singles match. McMahon, livid with the result of the title match he was angered into, decided it would go ahead as planned but now the title would be on the line.

And so it went.

Again, Triple H wins and retains his title. Again, the crowd goes insane for it.

McMahon, still pissed at how the night has gone and willing to do whatever to make sure Orton leaves with the belt, runs into Triple H backstage and announces "The Viper" would be invoking his rematch clause and it would be taking place later on in the night.

And it would be a Last Man Standing match.

Orton wins the belt back after a hard fought match, Triple H comes out having gained yet another title reign, and McMahon gets his way.

What a rollercoaster ride.
