A couple of months back I had written my first FanPost here at CSS entitled "Making a Case for the Miz as a Future Face of the WWE" in which I argued as to why the Miz could be a potential successor to John Cena’s throne. Back then the Miz was still a much hated heel and my argument was based purely on my imagination as to how he would fit into the role of a face. Now, judging by his successful face turn and the positive reactions he has been getting from the fans, I am convinced that the Miz is without a shadow of a doubt a frontrunner for this position. While in the earlier post I had argued why the Miz is deserving enough to be the next face of the company, in this one I plan to discuss my strategy in terms of booking to elevate him to that level.
Any babyface needs a credible heel opponent in order to get him over as a face and in the landscape of the current WWE there are a select few who understand the fine art of getting their opponent over as well as CM Punk. I believe a long feud with Punk lasting through a major portion of the year will help take Miz to the next level. It will give him a chance to improve his wrestling skills as well as sharpen his skills on the mic.
So in my scenario, after WrestleMania 29 CM Punk would have lost the title as well as the subsequent rematch thus making way for a new challenger to the title. Here I would book the Miz to have CM Punk as a guest on MizTV and quiz him about how it feels to not be champion after nearly a year of being Champion. This would end up with the both of them go back and forth about each other’s careers and championship reigns and talking about who was a better champion and ultimately cause Punk to challenge Miz to a match at the next pay-per-view.The story so far would be that of the arrogant former Champion unable to deal with the loss of his title and the cocky face upstart who says it like it is. Finally this would build to a 1 on 1 match at the next pay-per-view which CM Punk would win cleanly. Following this victory, when CM Punk comes out the next night to celebrate, I would have him cut a ‘worked shoot’ promo (which he has made a career out of ) on the reality show background of the Miz and how he could never beat a true wrestler like himself. The story would now shift focus on the reality star background of the Miz and his wrestling abilities. The smark audience would surely love this storyline and wholeheartedly support Punk in this, which would suit this storyline perfectly with CM Punk enjoying humiliating him for his lack of wrestling expertise and the fans cheering him on for doing so. The Miz will at this point get a chance to act like a true face and get the non-smark majority of the audience behind him by cutting promos about how he grew up a fan and always wanting to be a WWE Superstar and how hard he worked to get here. He could then admit that he isn’t the most technically gifted but he has always worked hard and will continue to do so because he is living his dream and he isn ‘t going to let Punk or anybody else take that away from him. Around this time, I’d also book a parallel track between Miz and Vickie where he clashes with her and she does her best to make his life a living hell. The next pay-per-view match between Punk and Miz would then be declared a submission match by her knowing Miz's lack of experience and playing to Punk's strengths. The story going into this match would be the Miz’s lack of expertise in technical and submission wrestling and Punk taking advantage of it. The match would be dominated by Punk who should showoff his wrestling skills throughout and mock the Miz while the Miz in true babyface fashion wouldn’t give up and would keep fighting back. Eventually the match would end with a dirty finish due to interference by Vickie causing Punk to pick up the win. However, the Miz would not tap out but instead pass out. This would convey to the crowd his fighting spirit and help get him over as a face. The next night on RAW, Punk could once again come out and mock the Miz by saying he was stupid to think he could beat the greatest wrestler in the history of the WWE. He could then compare himself to the likes of Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Bret Hart etc and say that he was better than them all. This would bring out Ric Flair who just happened to be in attendance to say that Punk was a disgrace and that the Miz was screwed out of a win at the previous pay-per-view and at the next pay-per-view he would personally ensure that nobody interfered on Punk’s behalf because he would be the "Special Guest Referee". Punk would then attack Flair thus causing the Miz to come out for the save. The following weeks leading upto the next pay-per-view, Miz could regularly team up with Cena against Punk and whichever heel Cena is facing at the time with Ric Flair in their corner. This would establish him as the No.2 face in the Company and then Cena and Flair could put him over in promos talking about how far he’d come and his future with the WWE. Finally, at the pay-per-view the Miz could beat Punk in a 20-25 minute wrestling match and in the end have his hand raised by Flair with JBL and Cole on commentary putting him over and proclaiming to the world that perhaps this was the birth of a new star and the beginning of a new era.
The era of AWESOME.
