Jerichoholic_21’s Match of the Week: Lionheart, Tyson Kidd, Gail Kim and more

Welcome to the fourth edition of my weekly ‘Match of the Week' FanPost offering here at CSS! In this edition also I've decided to present not one but two matches because I missed last week's edition.

The first match is Daniel Bryan and Gail Kim vs. Tyson Kidd and Melina which took place on the 24th March 2011 edition of Superstars when Daniel Bryan was still a clean cut good guy and Gail Kim was supposed to be his equally smiley happy babyface girlfriend and this match was basically designed to put them over as the next "power couple" of the WWE. Ofcourse in typical WWE fashion, the storyline was scrapped before it even took off and a short while later Gail Kim quit the company swearing never to return. But the one good thing that came out of this pointless angle was this match which was simply awesome. Not only was this better than most inter-gender tag matches which are invariably cliched, repetitive affairs but this was also an excellent stand alone tag match by itself with all four workers doing a great job. There wasn't much of a story to this match and it was a simple randomly put together face team vs heel team affair like most matches are on Superstars but what really stood out about this match was the fact that despite the presence of acclaimed workhorses such as Tyson Kidd and Daniel Bryan in the match it was the women who really stole the show. Melina and Gail Kim put on a clinic here demonstrating that divas can put on a good show if given the time and opportunity. Also, the match was peppered with interesting spots such as the twin missile dropkicks, and the flying crossbody from the turnbuckle to the outside executed perfectly by Gail Kim making it all the more enjoyable for a spot-freak like myself. Meanwhile, Daniel Bryan and Kidd also held their own and contributed to the entertainment quotient of the match. All in all it was a thoroughly entertaining match with excellent wrestling, a receptive crowd and two very hot women wrestling each other. As an adult male heterosexual wrestling fan- Win, win, win!

The next match is one of the best I've watched in a long time. I had watched it when it came on TV the first time but that was 8 years ago and only recently rediscovered it through the power of the internet. Lionheart Chris Jericho vs. Lance Storm at ECW One Night Stand '05. The pay-per-view was a huge success and this match contributed hugely to that by being the best match on the card. It played off on the famous real life friendship between Lance Storm and Chris Jericho who acknowledged it with a friendly handshake before the match. Old school "Lionheart" Jericho was awesome and the crowd showed its appreciation by chanting "Lionheart" instead of "Y2J" throughout the match. Jericho-Storm had terrific chemistry evidenced by the plethora of holds and counters they did throughout the match. Normally, I'm not a fan of smark crowds in general and ECW crowds specifically but in this case they were the perfect crowd to appreciate the history of the superstars in the match. The commentary team consisting of Joey Styles and Mick Foley did a great job running through the history of Jericho-Storm in the ring consisting of their days training together in Canada to their run as the ThrillSeekers in Smokey Mountain Wrestling. Around halfway through the match the crowd started a "Holy Shit" chant in response to a spot where Jericho caught Lance coming off the top rope with a dropkick to the back of the head. Awesome. Aside from that, the match was full of other awesome stuff like the Bridging tiger suplex, cradle piledriver and even a superkick from Storm to Jericho. This match was the opening match and completely served its purpose by setting the tone for the evening. My only gripe with it was the ending but I guess it also served its purpose as an ode to the Impact players who reunited for that segment only. Overall, great wrestling, good commentary, a great crowd and Chris Jericho came together to make this an awesome overall experience. Catch it if you can.

That's it from me Cagesiders. Hope you enjoyed this week's edition of Jerichoholic_21's Match of the Week.
