Wrestler Wrankings: 2012-2013 Season, Week 18

Wrankingslogo_medium

Welcome to another edition of Wrestler Wrankings, the sports column that quantifies the world's foremost form of sport... professional wrestling.

Once every four years, pro wrestling takes a step back while the Olympic Games reign, for a fortnight, as the supreme showcase in sports. The Olympics are generally heralded as the last bastion of amaturism at the highest level of sport, but professional superstars in certain sports such as basketball, tennis, and soccer are eligible to compete.

These mainstream stars such as Lebron James, Andre Agassi, and Ronaldinho add much needed mainstream intrugue to the games; however, soccer only allows three footballers over the age of 23 per squad and word has recently circulated that the participation of NBA stars may be limited in the future. This could dramatically reduce interest in the Games.

Olympic wrestling has always lacked for star power, so we here at Wrestler Wrankings ask, "why not integrate professional wrestlers into the tournament?"

Imagine John Cena, clad in star-spangled jean shorts, pandering to the crowd. There's Tyson Kidd thrilling Canada by dominating the lighter weight classes with his high flying attack. And of course, British national treasure Wade Barrett, hitting Wasteland to secure the gold medal as Glasgow's own "Rowdy" Roddy Piper coaches from matside (assuming he hasn't been ejected form the premises for smashing a coconut on the Fijian coach's noggin.) Surely Kate Middleton would agree to escort Barrett to the ring as his personal valet. It would be a spectacle beyond compare.

Given the importance the International Olympic Committee puts on television ratings and media attention, this addition to the Games seems like a foregone conclusion. I, for one, can't wait to cheer on our favorite pro wrestlers in Rio at the 31st Olympiad.

Given the rigorous schedule of these professional wrestling stars, it would be unfair to expect them to perform in a formal Olympic trials. Let us instead use Wrestler Wrankings as the official means of deciding who comprises each national team. Let the games begin!
