When John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) thought his wrestling career was over due to a banged up back in 2006, he moved to the commentary desk to call matches with Michael Cole on Smackdown. He did well for himself, too, playing the heel role perfectly and adding just the right amount of insight without sounding ridiculous in the process.
It worked so well, in fact, it's led to speculation he may return in the same capacity. Once Booker T, who had been occupying that role recently, was bumped up to Smackdown General Manager and left the ringside announce desk, that left an opening.
In a recent interview with Wrestling Inc, JBL says he's interested in filling it:
"I am interested. ... The job does appeal to me, yeah. I never thought the job would come open. There's only two jobs for color commentary in WWE and Jerry Lawler may be there for another 30 years and I hope he is. He's a great commentator. Booker moving to the general manager role opens up that job. But, that doesn't mean it's not filled and I don't know it. It could be filled and they may already have plans for it -- I don't know that. I haven't been offered the job. They haven't told me, 'Hey we want you to come work,' or anything. So, yeah, it does interest me and if they called, it certainly would be very tempting to do."
Ideally, WWE would put Cole back on Smackdown with JBL permanently and Jim Ross would return to Monday Night Raw to call matches with his longtime broadcast partner, Jerry Lawler. But that's probably a pipe dream, and one that may not be shared by the rest of you.
Any Cagesiders out there hoping JBL returns to color commentary?
