It's that time again. The anniversary of one of the best nights in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) history. The anniversary of the night Shawn Michaels thumbed his nose at Hulk Hogan during their match at SummerSlam.
On this date in WWE history (Aug. 21, 2005), "The Heartbreak Kid" over-sold for "The Hulkster" to the extreme.
Hogan had come back to the company to be inducted into the Hall of Fame before WrestleMania 21 that year. This, of course, led to another brief run where Hogan got involved with Michaels and the two built towards a match at SummerSlam. How they got there was the source of contention.
Michaels, who was a babyface at that time, same as Hogan, wanted a simple babyface vs. babyface match-up with the idea that the two could have a match simply to determine who was the better man. Hogan being who he is, however, didn't want this. He preferred a traditional babyface vs. heel program that would see him overcome and ultimately win in the end.
Big surprise, huh?
So Michaels went full out, doing a memorable skit parodying Hulk on Larry King that apparently pissed Hogan off because it hit too close to home. The best angles are rooted in reality but when you're dealing with someone with an ego the size of "The Hulkster's," insecurity runs wild.
By the time they got to the match, no one was really happy. Michaels retaliated against Hogan's politics by overselling most of his offense to hilarious results. It made him a hero in the eyes of some, unprofessional to others, and a complete ass to Hogan. Still, it was one of the best matches of Hulk's career, a testament to the talent of HBK.
