The third match-up in the first round of the Cageside Seats (CSS) Pro Wrestling Tournament is officially in the books and it was a blowout. Number four seed Terry Funk (275 votes) handily defeated number 13 seed Bob Backlund (99 votes) by a margin of 176 votes.
The tournament continues today with a match-up pitting number three seed Bret Hart against number 14 seed Chris Benoit.
Bret was likely the most famous (sorry, Stu) and successful member of the legendary Hart family. He began his career with Stampede Wrestling before moving to Japan and finally, the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It was there that Hart rose to prominence, first as a tag wrestler and then a singles star who had multiple world title reigns. He finished his career with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) where he found some success but not nearly as much as times previous.
Benoit, not unlike Hart, was one of the best technical wrestlers of all time. Though he was undersized for the business he was in, which led to big problems later on, he worked as hard as anyone ever has and achieved a great deal of success spanning the entire globe, from Japan and back stateside, with all the major promotions, from WCW to Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Unfortunately, his career is mired by the circumstances surrounding his death, perhaps rightfully so. It's difficult to say either way.
Benoit idolized Hart when he was young and after meeting each other, Hart became a bit of a role model for him. They would work together while in WCW, including a memorable tribute match to Owen Hart shortly after he died. Hart, naturally, went over.
