Brock-Goldberg
The Cageside Seats (CSS) Pro Wrestling Tournament continues today with a match-up pitting number eight seed Brock Lesnar against number nine seed Bill Goldberg.
Lesnar recently came back to pro wrestling after a short but successful career in mixed martial arts that included winning the UFC heavyweight championship. But during his initial run with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) between 2002-2004, he was basically the top dog all throughout, winning multiple world titles, the Royal Rumble, the King of the Ring, and anything else you can think of. In two years, he did it all.
Goldberg's flame shined just as short and maybe just as bright. He rapidly rose to fame during the last pro wrestling boom period in the late 90s and captivated the world with his impressive physique and set of power moves that got over in a hurry. He was pushed to the moon with an undefeated streak that lasted for over a year and included winning the U.S. and world heavyweight championships. His later run with WWE was forgettable but that may have had more to do with backstage politics than anything else.
These two have met inside the ring just once and it was, quite simply, one of the most embarrassing matches of all time. They tangled at WrestleMania 20 in 2004 in what should have been a blockbuster showdown but ended up being a pock mark on both men's careers. Goldberg ultimately went over.
