I've always been pretty indifferent to WWE having two main titles, but lately, I've come to feel pretty strongly (as strongly as one can feel about pro wrestling) about unifying the titles for good under the banner of one WWE title. I think doing this would help the product and restore some of the tradition that we miss.
The whole idea behind a World Title and a WWE title was that there were two shows that didn't mix except for around Wrestlemania. And each show would have its own roster, its own feuds, and even their own PPV at one point.
But leading up to Wrestlemania and especially afterwards, WWE broke down all reasons to have two titles. And getting rid of them would likely improve the product.
While the shows were starting to blend within the last couple years, HHH made it official in the role of Raw GM when he made it the current "Raw Supershow" (which may or may not be starring Brock Lesnar.) So every one was seen on Raw, and anyone could wrestle anyone else despite brand. Then Wrestlemania hits and we're given a single GM of both Raw or Smackdown as Johnny likes to say (an easier way to say it would be WWE GM.) That ended the separate fake leaders of the brands.
And most recently, WWE broke down the one final barrier -- rosters concerning titles. The fact that Daniel Bryan, who is on... Smackdown?, can lose a World Heavyweight Title match and then earn a WWE title the next match is ridiculous. Now there are two titles and anyone can vie for either one? That just cheapens things.
Remember now, guys like Roddy Piper never actually held the WWE title. But with two titles, twice as many people can hold them, so we get unworthy people holding a title more often than we used to. Jack Swagger and the Great Khali have held a "major" title but Hot Rod hasn't?
The IWC (and myself) laments the state of the IC belt and getting rid of the World Title would change that. If there were two titles back in 1998, then HHH and the Rock would have had a ladder match for the World Title at Summerslam, not the IC belt. The addition of a second title pushes the IC title down a peg. Imagine that all the World Title bouts were IC belt matches instead? Sheamus and Daniel Bryan would have been feuding for the Intercontinental title the last few months instead, which would be a good, high profile IC feud. WIth just one main title, big stars would be constantly having high profile feuds for the IC belt like the times we remember and love.
Plus, with one less title to occupy talent, the extra pool of talent could be used to focus the tag team division. Seeing a good tag team division again is probably a pipe dream of mine, but one can hope.
I'd love to see WWE unify the belts. That way there would be one top guy instead of two top guys (and while they're at it, they can redesign the title.) At the same time we could see the resurgence of the IC belt. The brands are already broken completely down, leaving no reason for two belts. While I don't see it happening, I'd gladly welcome it.
So what are your thoughts out there on the subject? Do you all like the two belt system or think it should go?
