"Wrestling's Worst Nightmare" is set to take on his biggest enemy once again.
Between 2007 and 2009, one of Ring of Honor's (ROH) best tag teams was that of Kevin Steen and El Generico. The two unlikely partners took on the best of the best in ROH including The Briscoe Brothers, The Age of the Fall and The American Wolves. In fact, Mark and Jay Briscoe count Steen and Generico as the toughest team they have ever faced.
With already one championship reign under their belts, the future seemed bright for the duo until Final Battle 2009. A loss to The Young Bucks sent Steen over the edge and he turned on his masked partner, laying him out with a vicious chair shot to the skull.
Their rivalry would span weeks and months, finally culminating one year after Steen's betrayal at Final Battle 2010. The big man had previously ripped Generico's mask off, forcing the luchador to adopt a darker, all-black mask. When they finally stepped inside the ring in New York City that night, it was a mask versus ROH career match.
Generico won and Steen was banished.
Fast forward to Final Battle 2011 and Steen is package piledriving Steve Corino to earn a spot back with the company. Jim Cornette's worst nightmare had been realized and after Steen brutalized and defeated Jimmy Jacobs, it didn't seem like he had anyone who could stand toe to toe with Steen.
But there is someone.
Full press release after the jump.
It's been a long time since Kevin Steen and El Generico have stood opposite each other inside an ROH ring in any official capacity. At "Death Before Dishonor IX" & "Final Battle 2011" they engaged in physical altercations, with Generico coming out on the losing end each time, and suffering serious injury from the Package Piledriver in December. That same night Generico was carted out to an ambulance (as seen exclusively on the "Final Battle 2011" DVD), Steen won his reinstatement into ROH and, thus far, 2012 has seen Kevin wage a personal war against ROH, Davey Richards, & Jim Cornette with his end goal being the ROH World Title.
In these early months of 2012, El Generico has been relatively silent while recovering from the neck and back injuries suffered in December but that silence was broken when, as noted in the 3/15 Newswire, ROH officials received a message recently that simply said "La Revancha" (revenge).
Then this weekend on "Ring of Honor Wrestling" TV, in the midst of Kevin Kelly interviewing Steen, Jim Cornette made his way to the ring to inform "Wrestling's Worst Nightmare" that he had an opponent for him on March 30th. A man that knows Kevin better than anyone else, his own "worst nightmare" if you will, none other than his former tag team partner, the man who put him out of ROH back at "Final Battle 2010": EL GENERICO!
"Do you think I care who Jimmy puts in the ring with me?" Steen told ROHWrestling.com Sunday night, "Generico had his one lucky night, the luckiest night of his entire life in 2010, and it's all been downhill for him since then. I watched him drop the ball trying to win the World Title, drop the ball as the TV champ, and drop the ball trying to play the hero at Final Battle! It's appropriate though that he keeps dropping the ball because well...I'll let you in on a little secret...Generico's balls haven't even dropped yet. So send another lamb to the slaughter Jimmy, send Generico to the grave I should have put him in years ago, and remember it's all on your head however it goes down."
It's La Revancha at "Showdown in the Sun"! Steen vs. Generico for the first time in over a year, and it all takes place on March 30th in Ft. Lauderdale! Get your tickets now or order the two-day iPPV broadcast right here!
Will Generico be the man to stop the Nightmare or will Kevin Steen continue his trek towards the World Title at The Generic Luchador's expense?
