On this date in WCW history: Meet the Ravens
Who richer than Kanyon?
On the February 8, 1999, edition of Monday Nitro, fans of World Championship Wrestling (WCW) were re-introduced to the character of Raven, who was last seen as the depressed, brooding leader of Raven's Flock.
He went from Morrissey to Joey Abs in three vignettes or less.
Turns out he was actually a rich, spoiled kid from the 'Burbs, and Kanyon spent a goof portion of Nitro following him around town in a badass convertible, all while meeting the rest of Raven's biological flock, including his "sister" (and former pro wrestling valet) Chastity.
A healthy dose of WCW silliness, after the jump.
Probably not the most flattering segment, especially considering those too-close-for-comfort spots with Kanyon, but it sure as heck beats cleaning the bathroom stalls in the Nitro locker room, which is what Eric Bischoff was doing on the same episode to avoid Ric Flair's "breach of contract" stipulation.
Good times!

What a mark, lol
Why would they ruin Raven like that? I can’t really tell you what it was about him and Raven’s Flock, but they had a cool vibe. Making him a spoiled rich, emo kid? Considerably less cool.
Gotta admit, that was all kind of funny. Ten thousand dollars in ones, “Versass”, breaking the fourth wall, calling him a “jabroni”…

This was great
I actually enjoyed this. Raven’s whiny, grungy character was in need of a refresh. Scott Levy can do a lot more than that one gimmick and seems like a funny guy, so this was a good showcase for that. Disappointingly, they brought in both Sandman and Chastity to play the family friend and sister, but soon after redebuted with watered down versions of their ECW gimmicks. I would have loved to have seen more of Fullington as the wacky neighbor and Chastity as the rich preppy type.
What’s ironic is that Scott Levy’s real-life personality is a lot closer to his Johnny Polo character than it is to Raven.
If you watch his shoot interviews or video blogs, he has a very high IQ, has a rather geeky personality, and tends to crack a lot of (intentionally) corny jokes.
Sure, he used to do a lot of drugs and listen to the Doors and Alice in Chains, but everything else seems to sync with Polo.
I don’t know that these vignettes gave Raven the best image makeover, but they at least showed that Levy didn’t take himself too seriously and was willing to pull back the curtain on what was fast becoming a relic wrestling character (grunge was long dead by this point).
What’s great about Levy is that he was creative enough to keep evolving the character physically while still retaining the same misanthropic traits, like when he ditched the jean shorts for leather kilts, the grunge hair for dreadlocks, etc.
Definitely one of the great, underrated wrestlers of his time. Its a shame he’s so beat up and is so hard to look at now, as he probably still has the creative goods to keep making positive contributions to the industry.
