On this date in WCW history: Scott Steiner shoots on Ric Flair and says 'WCW sucks'

Scottsteiner_medium

On the February 7, 2000, edition of World Championship Wrestling's (WCW) Monday Nitro, Scott Steiner decided he'd had just about enough of Ric Flair and that it was time to get a few things off his chest.

Even at the expense of his own employer.

Here's an excerpt:

"When you walked down that aisle last week, I know I wasn't alone, because the people at home, all they did was grab their remote, change the channel to the WWF and watch Stone Cold (Steve Austin), a person you and your old friends got fired from here because you're a jealous, old bastard. So Ric Flair, remember this, in this wrestling business, there's never been a bigger ass-kissing, butt-******* bastard in this business. But also in life, you're the biggest ass kissing, back-stabbing, butt-******* bastard and you belong where you're at, in WCW, because WCW sucks!"

Full video of his unscripted shoot, which earned him a two-week suspension (with pay -- lolz), after the jump.

Star-divide

Anyone think this was somehow, someway, an elaborate work?

a little harsh

but mostly true.
It’s funny that what Steiner did was essentially the same thing as Punk’s breakthrough promo on Raw last year, just with more anger and steroids. Steiner seemed like a bully, while Punk comes off as a realist.

i love the punishment. You are suspended with pay.

Hmmm in my mind. Wooo hooo. Vacation, Vegas here I come

I've got something to say; it better to burn out than to fade away!!!
I'm still waiting for my CM Punk WWE Ice Cream Bar.

the real humor

to this promo, is the fact Flair is the greatest of all time, and steiner is pathetic, and now that Flair is getting a huge check for the energy drink deal he can finally leave TNA which is a joke anyway, and go back to WWE. Scott Steiner makes me laugh because he was a World Champion when nobody cared about WCW….Hmmmmm let’s see Ric Flair 16 time World Champion, wrestled around the world, carried the NWA in the 80’s/90’s, won the rumble and WWE Title twice, got a great retirement……Scott Steiner carries a bag of roids into any indie shit promotion that still finds him entertaining…….Ric Flair 1XBillion Steiner 0

I don’t think anyone would argue that Steiner was better than Flair. But politics played a huge role in why the gap is so big between them (and many others), hence Steiner shooting.

politics always play a role in wrestling

but its not like Steiner never had a shot. The difference between the 2 is that Ric Flair is one of the greatest of all time on the mic and Steiner does nothing more than yell and shout obscenities into a mic.

Unfortunately, Flair doesn’t really have much financial stability. And even if he’s getting a great pay day from this energy drink thing you speak of, he will surely blow it to continue the Nature Boy gimmick he is living out.

If you haven’t yet, read this site’s writeups on Flair’s financial past. It’s quite impressive how a legend can avoid learning how to save a buck.

Judging by his post, I recommend he doesn't read any of that stuff

I wish I didn’t.

Yup Flair spends 5 bucks for every 1 dollar he earns.

Steiner is awesome

Steiner's general idiocy notwithstanding

He pretty much summed up the time that turned the WWF from ‘in control’ of the Monday Night Wars to ‘dominating while WCW falls apart’ with that Stone Cold crack. Great bit of wrestling nostalgia here…from the beginning of the end of an era with two majors.

Man, WCW in those later years right before they went belly-up sure were wacky, weren't they?
