Hustle, Loyalty, Disrespect? It's a character, get it?
So everyone here, especially the editors at Cageside Seats have taken issue with the story line involving John Cena, Zack Ryder, Kane, and one poor Eve Torres. I have made some comments about it. Played a little devil's advocate, and now with my first post on CSS, I am going to break it down for you in a way you may agree or disagree with.
As you are aware, Raw opened up with one of the most brutal segments in the history of the show. I call it brutal because Eve is seen talking to the Bella twins and talks about how she used Zack to get to John Cena, which quite frankly made zero sense. She's riding in ambulances with him, she is crying at his side, she is hanging out with him, blah blah blah. Once again the WWE showed us how they develop their characters, push them off the cliff like Thelma and Louise and pray they land on their feet. The segment made zero sense and seemed forced.
And then just before Eve is going to hatch her plan of treachery by going in Cena's locker room to apologize with the Bellas filming what would happen, Superman is standing there shaking his head. Then he goes down to the ring, with Eve begging for forgiveness while John Cena berates her with such zingers as " ", "wants to be disease free" and the ever popular #1 trend of twitter how do you say "hoeski."
Now, Geno, Sergio and many others took issue with this because of the message it sends to women. I call BS. Why?
The WWE since the mid nineties has become a cesspool for the way women are portrayed and treated. Since the days of Sable, the WWE's view of women and the wrestling has gone down the toliet. At this time women were looked at as objects and pawns to move one story to the next. Sable was forced to be Marc Mero's "lackey" and wear a potato sack when one day she revealed herself wearing very little at all. What kind of message does that send to little girls? You have to be completely sexy to be powerful? Trish Stratus, although I believe she can be one of the most improved women's wrestlers in the company going back to when she started managing a team called T&A to the 7 time women's champ who is respected, has been involved in multiple story lines where she is embarrased, humiliated, and downgraded by Vince McMahon and his family. And as Sergio mentioned in his story which I thought was well done, the endless berating of Stephanie McMahon by Chris Jericho, Mick Foley, and a few others that led to the wonderful slut chants. Hell, WWE must of had a deal with Playboy because of the number of "playboy themed matches" and I'm sorry I don't think of Playboy as a vehicle to empower women.
Oh but that was the attitude era. And everyone was kids, that was different. WWE is now rated PG.
Other than the fact that segment started the show and was poorly timed, and most likely should have been on later, what is the issue here? Is it a burial of Eve? No, its a face change, but WWE staying true to form is disrespecting the woman. Even in the PG era. Remember a couple months back with the "walkout," Beth Phoenix who is betrayed as a "strong female" became completely unbelievable with her one liner "Hunter, we're girls."
Which goes to make my point. What happened to Eve having a crowd chant "hoeski" was part of the storyline? The same storylines that WWE creative has been dreaming up for years. Should you be embarrased to be a wrestling fan because of it? Absolutely not. Honestly all the crap towards the end of the attitude era with the "so called women wrestlers" the degradation of women in story lines, the needless amounts of sex, and a few other things sent me away from wrestling for a few years. I came back because I believe the product improved a bit. They weren't chanting "slut" to her like they did to Lita, who actually did something wrong out of character. They were chanting "hoeski." Silly word, that means nothing. They are advancing the story line. They wanted to break her down because of how conniving she was backstage. It was the point. Now Eve gets to react in a strong manner later this week on WWE.com. That is how this story will be advancing.
But the message that the "Be a Star" and top guy in the company is sending to the audience is a poor one? Right?
Remember, the WWE does not take itself too seriously. It is a show. It's "sports entertainment." Are kids watching? Yes. But how many PG movies do you take your kids to that have questionable material and bad decision making by the writers and/or characters. What the WWE has done to Eve is quite frankly what they have been doing for years. I don't think you can call foul on them now just because of the so-called PG rating. You can't call foul because you have grown up. They've been bullshiting the audience forever so why are they going to change now?
This shouldn't be a surprise. I have two girls and would I let them watch wrestling right now, no. However, if they were to watch wrestling when they get older and this happened, I would have to educate them that women are viewed in a higher regard than this product views them. The WWE is doing their job. They're generating heat on a character who just underwent a face change. Don't hate on John Cena because he helped the cause. Don't be embarrassed of the show you love because they did something that you found offensive. Understand that at the end of the day, this is a show and it's telling a story, much like a movie, or TV series.
Art imitates life, and if someone pulled this crap in high school and got found out, the same thing would have happened to them. My issue with this segment in closing is how poorly executed it was. Eve sitting in the ring crying, trying to kiss Cena, how forced the whole thing was and how Eve's character went from making a poor decision to full blown face turn made zero sense to me. It's the WWE. Attitude era or not. They haven't changed, and if you think they ever will, you are kidding yourself.
Like Vince McMahon said at the end of this commercial, get it?
I would say that if you find this offensive, as well as the fact the top guy in the company is constantly bullying people around, which the WWE is against, you should take a hiatus like I did. I will never tell anyone how to be a fan of wrestling, and what not. However, I think going on a campaign that the WWE is sending a bad message to women, when quite honestly they have been doing for years, is all for naught. Use caution if you let your kids watch. Teach them to be strong and to "rise above hate." Educate them to not to be a bully, but be a star. Every corporation in sports and/or entertainment has this hypocrisy attached to them. With sports it's steroids, with Hollywood its drugs, and with WWE its a little bit of both.
I have been watching the WWE and other wrestling since I was 9 years old. On and off of course. I've seen some great times and great matches. I have enjoyed it for the most part. I tend to look at the positives that come from it, but realize the issues that go with it. If it gets to be too much, I tune out. That is the only thing you can do, because if you think they're going to change, you are asking too much. The WWE will always be moving, silly, fascinating, offensive at times, but will always do what they do. Try to entertain the customer and hope they come back for more. No matter at what norms or rules of society get bent or broken. What happened the other night to Eve wasn't a message sent to the crowd that its OK to treat women that way. It was developing a character who could be a great heel, or just plain vanilla. It's up to anyone who views it to take it however they want. As long as the players are in on it, how is this different from what the WWE has done in the last 20 years?
Thanks for reading.

Awesome post.
The dramatics towards that segment on this site is laughable.
If Cena came out and called Eve all those things without the “heel” turn the 5 minutes prior, then they’d have a point. It was corny definitely but it was NOT offensive. Putting the Bellas on TV is much more offensive than anything John Cena said. Let’s bitch about that.
To be honest, this site has proven that SMARKS WILL NEVER BE HAPPY.
We have Bryan Danielson and CM Punk as our champions for christ’s sake. We never would have imagined that watching them in 2004-2005 ROH.
It’s okay to be critical of certain things…but writing full diatribes on one segment you hate and blaming WWE instead of praising the things they are doing right? Much more offensive than any Cena segment.

Appreciate it but
My point was not about the WWE doing things right or wrong. My point is if you are going to engage in a product and they do something that is offensive, you can’t call foul when they have been doing it for years and expect different just because of a silly rating. The rating to the WWE means nothing. It’s like justification. Kind of like the whole Be A Star thing. Cena is offender number one, which I have noticed Geno has pointed out many times and he gets flamed once in a while for it, but hes a fricking spokesperson. The WWE is full of hypocrisy. I am not defending what happened. My two main points are 1-its tame compared to the past 2-if its too much, you cant watch. When I felt WWE went into left field, I stopped watching. That was the main point

Just because it's always been this way
Doesn’t mean it’s right. It was gross then and it’s gross now. The walkout angle with Beth was disgusting, and if I was on Cageside then I would have written something on it. I don’t understand your point at all. You are trying to walk an arbitrary line that shouldn’t exist. You wouldn’t let your children watch, but you are okay with it happening? Just because it’s a show? No, that is not, nor ever should be an excuse. Yes, we are all aware that we cannot change WWE. That is not why we write what we do. A grown man who talks about “rising above hate” is slutshameing a woman whom he himself kissed. It’s shitty writing, it’s a shitty creative direction, and it’s disgusting.
What I don’t understand at all is why the fuck anyone wants to defend this? Why do you want to call women whores? Why is this something worth defending? Anyone who knows me or knows my writing will tell you I am a shill for WWE. I will go far out of my way to find something good. How the fuck is someone gonna call me a sheepie and a mark, and then turn around and call me a miserable smark? If there was literally a single decent thing about this segment I would be the first to defend it. The fucking first. There is not a single thing worth defending. To say “it’s just tv” and “it’s just an angle” ignores everything we are saying. People watch this show. Children watch this show. I want to someday sit with my kids and watch professional wrestling. I would be ashamed if my children saw this. Just because it’s been happening for 20+ years doesn’t make it right.
If you really want to defend this shit, then that is on you and those that agree with you. But look who is on this side. Go back and look at some of the comments in Sergio’s post. Unapologeticly misogynistic. These are people who are not talking about a show, but about real life. If you want to throw your lot with them, that’s your prerogative. But I don’t know how you read some of those comments without getting sick

I get it...
So let me ask you, if your mom, sister, daughter… or more importantly.. a g/f or wife were sitting there with you, would you feel slightly ashamed of your position? I call B.S.
People are allowed to change their minds & view points as they see fit. Just because you enjoyed something, which wasn’t even the same scenario, say 15 years ago doesn’t mean you would enjoy it today. People evolve and grow up. Maybe if I looked at this Eve thing with a 20yr old’s eyes & mindset I would have a different view, but I am not.
The fact that your whole logic is hinged on what you mentioned in your rant is irrational.
The fact is Eve played Cena, Cena had hurt feelings & he wasn’t going to take it.. he couldn’t understand that a woman wouldn’t bend over backwards to be with him, his ego took over & out came on of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. All Eve was doing is the same thing that men have done for centuries to get ahead. Not that it makes it right mind you, but Cena accepted her kiss & then when he found out her intentions were he couldn’t handle it like a man or an adult, he had to act like a child. He called her a bunch of names & abused her. She did not deserve that treatment, and I didn’t deserve to have to watch it. There were little boys in that audience who learned that if someone hurts you that you have the right to lash out & berate them in such a bullying manner.

And that is true
But if you are going to watch the WWE, you need to know that this is how the game is played and if you are watching the program and you do let your kids watch, you need to educated them this is not the right way to do things, or you need to decide not to allow them to watch. That is my overall point.
"80 percent of this thread is rangerjae's sig". -Jim Margulus 6/16/11
1st, I don’t need to do anything w/ the kids.
I didn’t watch SD until my sister came to pick her kids up in fear that they would over hear or see that angle if they replayed it.
I want my little nephew to watch PW with me… He gets a kick out of some of it, but after that, I cannot. If he went home or to daycare & uttered one word of what Cena said to Eve I would 1st have my ass kicked by my sister, 2nd I would be fearful that she would think I disrespected her or worse.. have her lose trust in me w/ her children. I was planning to have him watch next Monday w/ me to see Rock… I can’t now & it saddens me because I love when little dude stays the night & we get to watch something I enjoy & having him get into it.
Cena/WWE/The writers & Eve to an extent (though I can see her being bullied) have really disappointed me. If my sister saw this, I couldn’t defend it, there is nothing I could say that would make it ok for at any point for her kids to watch. Even if I explain that its not ok to say that stuff, that doesn’t mean he unlearned it. I use bad behavior plenty in tv to teach him right from wrong.. its hard when its Cena & he’s supposed to be the good guy… its not like its Batman & I can say, don’t do what Penguin did or Two Face… its Cena & they portray him as the ultimate do goody goody.

Fair points
I will agree with much of what you say here. I would love my daughter to watch wrestling. She would get a kick out of it. Can I let her watch now? No because I feel she is four and not old enough to make judgments on this yet. I would feel she would be influenced. Do I enjoy it? Hell yes!
In the case of Cena being the ultimate do gooder, I understand what you are saying and then you have to teach kids the whole its not black and white, good vs evil all the time which is very hard to do.
It sucks about your nephew. You could take a chance, but I don’t know. Rock has known to get pretty creative. What do you say to your nephew when he asks what “pie” is? What do you say when he talks about Cena’s lady parts trending worldwide?
Maybe the discussion needs to move to is it appropriate to give Raw a PG rating when they cross the line?
"80 percent of this thread is rangerjae's sig". -Jim Margulus 6/16/11
The visual of Eve on the ground crying while Cena is berating her is the most disturbing.
The innuendo of what Rock says is over his head.. at this point. Hearing 2 guys jawing at each other isn’t much different than most things in PW… if he asks something I answer that when or what ever it requires. I’m not going to let him see a man treat a woman like that when he’s supposed to be the good guy. There’s no lesson I can really teach there. Oh, I can say he’s being a meanie butt & shouldn’t be like that… but does that really work here. I’m not risking it. He’s got a twin sister & a younger sister & an older sister & his mom.. he needs to know how to treat a lady with respect… Cena didn’t do that… even if he was wronged, which he was NOT.. Cena wasn’t in the right anyway w/ the whole Ryder deal.. there is no way a MAN should do that to a woman. There are many more mature ways to handle a woman like that.. mainly just walking a way. Now this is PW, so maybe Cena had to do something, but doing that to her when she’s on the ground crying is not the visual a young boy should see. Nor should a young woman.

Little dude is 4 & so is his twin sis. Younger sis is 2 & the oldest is 11. The oldest isn’t into wrestling, but to see a woman treated like that is not the message she should see either. No woman should be taken down like that… to be berated while crying & the only response is for her to make a run at him to love on him… just to be demeaned some more.

The only thing you could do
Is use it as a lesson on what not to do. Tell him how wrong it is and that Cena is the bad guy in this situation. But I agree that you should not be put in that position. Good call on not turning on Smackdown. It’s not fair for anyone who wants to pass their wrestling love onto the next generation

I was watching RAW with my mom, and she agreed with what I've been saying
Eve was a hoski. Her character very publically proclaimed herself to be a golddigger, using Ryder, wanting to use Cena. Calling her out on it, calling her a ho(ski) is calling the sky blue, or a cow black and white.
It was letting it drag on for five minutes after it should have stopped, watching Eve sit there crying, that was awkward and should have been done differently.

off of him, and on to Eve. She’s the sacrificial lamb, though the people who have been booing Cena are still going to be booing him.

We (guys) will never like him. Appreciate his work yes. But he is too corny, five moves of doom, and too much like Hogan.
If they did anything yesterday, they may have killed some of the women who like him

If he called her a tramp and that was it
Then fine. I wouldn’t like it, but fine. Business as usual. The level that they took it was way too far. It was too quick a turn, there was no lead up, and Cena treated her like a dog. If Ryder called her a hoeski, fine. That fits his character a bit more. Cena co-opted Ryder’s pain, made it his own, and took it too far. You can’t say that it just went too far, because that is our entire complaint.

He called her a 'hoski', 'skankapottomus', and something about skank juice
Given that Eve made it very clear that she was using her looks to use Ryder for her own personal gain, and wanted to do the same to Cena, she fits the criteria of what a ‘ho’ is defined as, and skank is general trashiness, so I guess those apply to what she did too. She was called out for it. I don’t have a problem with Cena saying it, because he, too, was ‘wronged’, in the sense that her conniving lost him a friend in Ryder (ignoring that he kissed her back) and that she sought to capitalize on him the same way she capitalized on Zack. If viewed as a real-life relationship, he would have some cause for being angry at her, so it’s not as if there’s no reason whatsoever for Cena chewing her out.
In the end, though, my only fault with is and remains that it went too far, not in terms what was said or level of emotion, but length of time. After Cena said his schtick and left the ring, they should have went to commercial and been done with it. As a member of the television audience, watching Eve sit there in the ring for a minute or so, and then be escorted to the back after another two or three minutes, was completely meaningless and awkward. The atmosphere at the event itself may have been different, calling for them to script Eve to be out there longer, but from my couch in my living room, it was time to move on.

You cannot ignore that he kissed back
That is central to the whole thing. He was just as in the wrong. And of Cena is wearing a shirt that says rise above hate, the. He cannot sit there and yell at a woman. And yes, it fits the technical definition. But the word has a much deeper connotation than that. And it’s not just Cena. Why did WWE have to make Eve into a goldigger? I hate the whole story, from creative to kayfabe.

And in my piece I stated art imitates life
When it comes to sex, the male is never wrong. If a guy sleeps with 5 girls, he’s a stud. Other way around, she’s a slut. If a guy uses a woman for money, he’s just a bum. If a girl uses a man for that reason, she’s a gold digging slut.
yes Cena kissed her back. But she’s the skank. If the WWE wanted to wrap things up, then why didnt they do what they always do, no closure. Not many may have care, but this has SMH hands all over it. This will develop, it will fester. Eve must now get her revenge. And this will be a sub plot involving Cena and Ryder going into the biggest match of the year. Wooooooo!!!!!

Yes, it's a mirror of society
But great works try to change that image. If WWE is content on relying on tired clichés, fine. But they can be a force of good. They can change opinions and values. I hate that a double standard exists, and I hate people and programs that reinforce it. I would never slutshame anyone trying to enjoy themselves, man or woman. There was a better way to handle it.

I generally don’t like Cena to begin with, so this was par the course for me (and many others) and doesn’t evoke much…derision, if you will- I am always disliking him, so nothing new.
As for why Eve was made into a gold digger, to make her the bad guy in the storyline, because Cena is being pushed as the good guy in his confrontation with the Rock (“I’m always here, you’re not”).

Yes, I get why
The question was meant to be why in that manner. They could have made her a strong, powerful heel. Have her be in charge of Kane, have her be the ring leader, give her some type of motivation besides “so people will know me.” Instead of a 5 minute turn and payoff, stretch this out for a little while. If they needed Cena to focus solely on the Rock now, then do this after the Rumble. It’s cheap heat and bad storytelling.

Getting off topic now, but having her in charge of Kane would be cheaper, IMO
Kane is supposed to be all demonic and monstery and such. I still would like a “Kane hypnotized me” angle to the story, because it appeals to my early-90s campy storylines side.
But, anyway, I agree that it would’ve been better dragged out. Going from 30 to 100, in terms of the “Bad Guy Meter” in five minutes was a little too much. If she hung around with Cena, and we slowly got the idea that she was using him and he was oblivious to it, I would have liked that better (They might not have been able to do that with Cena actually being married in real life, and the stuff that entails, but whatever). Rushed booking is nothing new, as we all bemoan pretty constantly.

OK ease up cowboy
First, I never said I agree with the WWE’s methods. In the post I said quite the opposite. In fact I also stated I stopped watching due to some of the disrespect. What I am saying is everyone is going off about this, but it’s been going on forever. And the comment was made “it happened years ago but we were too young to understand.” I am saying it is what it is. You knew it then and you know now. Don’t be surprised.
I am truly not defending what they did. I am saying its the way of the WWE. Unless you are going to call out the way of business as a whole, you can’t just single this out. However, this segment compared to past is tame

I wil and do call the business out as a whole
It’s all disgusting. I’m not surprised, I’m disappointed. There were explicit promises that changes would be made. And nothing ever changes. I won’t just quit watching because I love 90% of the WWE. This single segment, though, ruined the entire show for me. And so I chose to voice my displeasure. Saying we shouldn’t talk about what happened on Raw cause we should have seen it coming runs counter to the whole point of the site. We talk and debate and argue and express our opinions about what happened.
What pisses me off the most about all of this are those who defend Cena’s and the WWE’s action. I cannot even read any of the comments in Sergio’s post, nor look at any in my own. To say its a character misses the entire outrage. Burning an effigy is not burning a real person, but there is an explicit symbolism involved. Calling a woman a whore in front of millions of people, without any acknowledgment of it’s wrongness, is wrong. There should be no one defending it by any means

Not to mention encouraging 11k people to treat her like she’s wearing a Scarlet A. It would be irresponsible of me to let any young kid watch that. I sent the twitter you asked.

All movements start with one ideal. They take time to grow & you need to get to the right people to help it grow. You should look into contacting Linda’s opponents & feminist groups. If you REALLY wanted to make a play, using a commercial during Raw would be excellent.

You can always write people with influence
Maybe gets ignored, but maybe not
Contact Mark Cuban and see if he wants to help start a new fed and sign the WWE guys? (We can dream!)

And this goes back to the poor timing of the angle
0-80 in 3 seconds. When Eve reacted to the Bellas like I did I was surprised.
When she came out begging John to hear her out, I was even more surprised.
When the whole thing went down, I couldn’t believe it, but I knew it was going to happen the minute he said skank juice.
I went to Sergio’s comments and yes there are misguided. Please do not think that is the side I am taking. I am saying everyone knows what the WWE is about and when you call this particular case out, you know its coming, so why be angered and/or shocked? Its just business as usual with the WWE. Not saying its right or just. But it is what it is.
I stopped watching from 2002-2005 due to this silliness, saw Wrestlemania 22 in good old Chi town and then decided to try again, but after seeing more of the same old crap, plus the whole Benoit thing, I stopped watching again, and gave it another shot when I heard about the Punk shoot. Please don’t think I am defending the angle, I am just saying this is what the WWE does. Not saying its right, but its the product we choose to watch. Ultimate point I’m making.

Okay, apologies for misreading your point
I’m just frustrated with the whole situation and went off. I see your point now. I don’t agree that we should just accept it though. No, it probally won’t change. But if there is a chance that enough people write good intelligent posts that something might change, we should take it

Word!
As long as WWE is a billion dollar business and the law isn’t shutting them down, never will though which is unfortunate.
But Im telling you, Rock will bring this whole thing up and I hope he does. I think he will say something along the lines of embarassing her. This angle although it looks wrapped up, isnt over.

I fear that it is over
I hope Rock does the right thing, but I don’t think he will. He has no history of doing so. And I think Cena is the bad guy, but I don’t think WWE sees it that way

Oh the WWE definitely doesnt see it that way, why?

Rock should use the race card.. saying a white man berating & humiliating a lady of color or a Hispanic lady goes back to his East Coast roots of being better than everyone & him stepping on those he sees as under him.

Excellent!
Honestly, if the WWE wants to save a little face here, Rock needs to blast him for it in one way or the other.
My money is on its over, but I can hope ya know!

Did Eve even do anything that implied sexual promiscuity? As far as I can tell she just kissed Cena, and he kissed back. No sex involved. She then told the Bellas that Ryder didn’t even get to first base, so clearly nothing happened there either.
I’m just confused as to how Eve being a manipulative female warrants her getting burned at the stake for all the whore/slut/ho jokes.
Nor do I...
And neither do I condone any such treat of any Diva, be they Eve or Lita, Vicky or Molly Holly. (Yes, I am equating fat-shaming with slut-shaming.)
It might be business as usual, but that just shows how far in the past the business is stuck. Just as WWE won’t let go of pushing big guys with minimal talent, it won’t really let go of the old attitudes towards women. The fact that Eve’s slut-shaming is part of business as usual is a symptom of the greater illness…the societal attitudes and double-standards that prevent true equality. Men and women should be held accountable for their actions, and it should be done in a constructive way, not in ways that will do nothing but harm.
Time to spread a little chaos...
I thought the whole segment was dumb, but I think some folks are overreacting about this post.
I think the original intent was not to endorse what happened, but point out that this is business as usual. And that writing extended posts about it won’t be an effective way of changing that. But changing the channel and lowering their ratings might.
Like I said. Dumb segment. Made zero sense in terms of Eve’s story up to there. Made the entire arena look like mongoloids. But I don’t think this post was ENDORSING that. And it seemed like some people were taking a for-it or against-it stance. While this post was more about the fact that it’s always been this way and we shouldn’t be quite so blown away.
Just what I took from it.

Thank you sir
That was the intent. And I think the passion of people saw the title and took it the wrong way.

That's the problem with headlines
They have to be broad to capture attention in a small space. I think if you had a different headline and re-worded certain parts, it would have been clearer what you were trying to say. Doesn’t excuse myself for misreading it, but just a small point for future posts.

You cannot effect ratings by changing the channel
Unless you have a nielson box. That is one of the great myths of television. Whatever I or most people do has no effect on the program.

If you had one, would you know?
Or do they randomly plant chips in cable/satellite boxes and whatever else, collect data, but not tell you as to not influence what you watch?

You would know
You have to sign up and there’s a bunch of paper work involved. Plus, you used to have to write down who in the household were watching what shows. I know they were trying to get away from that model, but I think people still have to do it
