Brodus Clay says Planet Funk is 'still in orbit, ya dig'

Rumors of Brodus Clay's demise may have been greatly exaggerated.

That's according to The Funkasaurus himself, who took to Twitter to let the world know he's not dead just yet:

"Don't believe the hater hype plant funk still in orbit ya dig!"

This after word broke that Clay's funky gimmick was being shelved due to Vince McMahon being unhappy with his ring work after just one bad match with Heath Slater. Which is quite ridiculous when you think about it because A) he was working with Slater and B) it happened during a Smackdown taping and never actually aired anywhere.

Of course, pro wrestling reporting is always touch and go, so it's entirely possible that the gimmick itself was never in trouble but rather Clay was given the WWE equivalent of a slap on the wrist by simply being ripped off television for a couple weeks.

Whatever the case may be, if we're to believe the man himself (and in this case there's no reason to think he's lying), the Funkasaurus from Planet Funk who is funky will be back in our lives soon enough.

Somebody call my momma.

Is Slater really that bad?

That’s a sincere question. There’s definitely a contingent of commentators (and staff) here that can spot a botch a mile away, but I’m not part of it. I can spot bad botches and instances where things generally aren’t going right, but I don’t have or haven’t yet developed the eye that some people have. That said, while I find Slater truly lacking in most respects (the basis of his heel characterization seems to be making a “forget it” gesture at the crowd), he seems pretty good in the ring. He’s quick and agile, he has a fairly broad moveset, and he’s light enough for people to toss him around. I remember being impressed that he was able to do Sin Cara’s first finisher (the tandem flip off the top turnbuckle—seems like they dropped it because it was too difficult for most opponents). Plus, he’s now been squashed by pretty much the entire roster, so that suggests to me that the WWE brass thinks he makes people look good.

So, to restate the question, why do you guys think he’s tough to work with or liable to have bad matches? Examples?

Well

interestingly enough, Clay isn’t the first guy to have a bad enough match with him to get into trouble. If you remember, when Mistico was teetering on the brink of employment and they were thinking of having Hunico replace him full time as Sin Cara, he had a botch filled match with Slater that resulted in that being scrapped.

One of the marks of a solid worker is the ability to adapt your style to suit others, especially if you’re being asked specifically to get a guy over. Slater works well with guys like Justin Gabriel but not so much against big men like Clay.

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.
