On this date in pro wrestling history: Jim Duggan becomes the Television Champion after finding the belt in the trash

Hooooooooooooe!

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall-of-Famer Jim Duggan has had one of the more colorful careers in pro wrestling history. One year you're skiing in the back of a limousine with the Iron Sheik, then you're taking top prize at the Royal Rumble, then you're fighting kidney cancer.

And winning!

After a successful stint in the WWF, Duggan debuted for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1994, squashing (of all people) "Stunning" Steve Austin. Like most of the talent in WCW, the artist formerly known as "Hacksaw" had his ups and downs from a creative perspective.

Following his win over cancer, Duggan returned to the ring as the (kayfabe) janitor of WCW, moving on to a forgettable feud against Revolution. Then came that fateful night on February 16, 2000, when Jimbo found the WCW Television Championship lying in the trash, right where Scott Hall left it.

Hey, finders-keepers, right?

Duggan would successfully defend the strap but Eric Bischoff eventually stripped him of it (for not earning it) and the belt was deactivated on April 10. WCW was deactivated less than a year later.
