Randy Orton suffers storyline concussion, pulled from Elimination Chamber pay-per-view

Randy-orton-4_medium

Update by Keith Harris: Subscriber only posts on f4wonline.com have confirmed that the concussion is legitimate. This is far from the first concussion Orton has suffered during his career. Indeed, last year he suffered a concussion a week before the June WWE PPV Capital Punishment, but was still medically cleared to compete on the show after passing the ImPACT testing of WWE's medical director Dr. Joseph Maroon, which has come under fire as being "a huge scam" of late due to the unreliability of the test. Thankfully WWE are playing it safe this time, given Orton's history of neurological issues. Don't expect him to be out long however, with WrestleMania right round the corner.

During last night's RAW, Randy Orton was taken out along with Big Show at the hands -- and belt -- of our beloved nature-walking, vegan World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan. According to the folks at WWE.com, Orton suffered a concussion and will not be cleared to compete at this Sunday's Elimination Chamber. Here they are with some details:

Randy sustained head trauma following his match with Big Show, in which Daniel Bryan interfered, and he was evaluated in the training room immediately afterward," WWE physician Dr. Michael Sampson told WWE.com. "Due to his symptoms as well as his neurological evaluation, he was diagnosed with a concussion. We will be doing more testing to see how he's going to do as far as short term vs. long term.

Orton will not be cleared to compete in the World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber Match this Sunday.

Star-divide

Whether Orton legitimately suffered some head trauma from taking some gold to the head (read: unlikely), needs to take some rest due to injury, or has been hanging out with Evan Bourne a little too much, this takes some of the star power out of Smackdown's Elimination Chamber bout this Sunday (Feb. 19). Hopefully Orton takes the time off to relax and heal, no matter what the reason. As for the open spot in the match, the WWE could be presenting us with more damaged goods. And we aren't talking about Eve after last night, folks!

Despite being suspended indefinitely by SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long on Feb. 3, Mark Henry has unexpectedly arrived at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., for a SmackDown live event. The World’s Strongest Man’s arrival at the venue comes on the heels of news that Randy Orton is not medically cleared to compete in the World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber Match this Sunday. On Raw SuperShow this past Monday, Orton suffered a concussion when World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan hit him over the head with his title.

And we go from one man who has taken quite a bit of rest from wear and tear to one who needs a lot of rest but can't catch a break. Go figure.

A dual-brand Battle Royale during tonight's (Feb. 14) Smackdown tapings to determine who would fill the empty slot left by Orton was held and won by ... Santino Marella? The result was later tweeted by Joey Styles.

This has certainly gotten ... interesting.

It's still hard even though it's very light

so it’s still going to hurt a little bit and depending on how hard its swung its not out the relm of possibility that it could cause a concussion

Should be very interesting...

This could be the disaster of all disasters OR could be interesting. Having Khali, Show, and Henry all stuck inside that chamber could be physically brutal. They could go stiff in there, since they can all dish it & take it from a size perspective, the match could have a few unique spots. Barrett isn’t a small man either, Cody & Bryan being very good workers and their abilities to put together a good match gives this a unique feeling. I felt that Orton was going to be the one walking out w/ the belt, so in my eyes this got wide open… even though I think Bryan deserves to be the guy going into Mania.

I know why they are not putting Sheamus in the match, they want to keep him strong & losing in the Chamber wouldn’t help matters. I know they want to use his ability to choose who he faces as the major selling point, but he’s the guy that should be in this match. They could have him in a flukey loss or whatever, but they should put him in it.

I went to WWE.com to learn the other guys in this SD chamber match.. and they announced that Santino will be the guy in the EC match.

Oh lord

I don’t know how good Santino really is, but nothing I’ve seen inspires faith. This will be a tough one to watch.

Sidenote, though. Is it breaking kayfabe to announce the results of a Friday Night Smackdown match on Tues? We all know it’s tape delayed, but isn’t the idea that it’s “live?”

I'm big, I'm white, I'm Irish, and G*d damnit people like me!

by C. J. Bradford on Feb 15, 2012 1:54 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah that is really strange.

I think it is safe to assume that the Raw chamber match is likely going to blow away the Smackdown chamber match. This Smackdown chamber match could very well end up as the worst one in years.

Anybody know what the deal is with Orton? Is he really legit hurt? WWE wouldn’t just remove him for some last-minute bullshit story-related reason, right? He’s by far the biggest star in the match. What do you think, maybe a wellness policy violation? Or maybe something is really wrong with him?

As far as the chamber participants go, I’m fine with Santino in there as a crowd favorite underdog. But that’s only if they also replace Khali with Sheamus. I know they won’t do it, but think about. How do Khali and Santino get PPV matches while the Rumble winner has absolutely nothing booked? It makes no sense.

by Kanenite on Feb 15, 2012 3:25 AM EST up reply actions

My theory is that he reaggrevated the injury that originally put him out. They don’t want to state that is the reason because they will catch heat for potentially having rushed him back too fast

by Buckeye Brawler on Feb 15, 2012 3:31 AM EST up reply actions

Sounds possible. He was working with a gigantic man on Monday. Maybe holding Big Show up for that DDT spot was too much for Orton’s back to handle.

by Kanenite on Feb 15, 2012 4:14 AM EST up reply actions

Sounds very plausible

Going by memory, I don’t recall anything that looked particularly “this can give someone a concussion”, so…

Shit!

I didn’t even think to warn people about the spoilers.

And you are right, it is very odd to be announcing this before it happens. I guess with the Chamber this week, they wanted to be proactive about a “bait n switch” legal situation.

by Rawuncutnxrated on Feb 15, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

It's on WWE.com, which I check semi-regularly

I guess there could be a bait and switch thing, but all PPV’s come with a “card subject to change” warning. This is just one of the weirder situations, top to bottom. Even Orton’s last injury had a real sleazy, odd feel to it. If he is hurt then he’s hurt. No one outside of the hardcore fanatics (both IWC and within the industry) would blame him for needing time to heal. Why are they going so over the top though?

This is correct according to a spoiler for the next Smackdown I saw elsewhere.

Apparently he wins a Battle Royal for the open spot.

It’s weird because I’ve been wondering if they would find a storyline way to get Jericho in both matches to unify the title again. (End of the World as We Know It, indeed)

First they bring back Khali out of nowhere, who sticks out like a sore thumb to me in that match, and now it appears Marella is in there as well? It’s just seems weird, although I readily admit the real reason for these 2 in an EC PPV match is really probably due to a depleted talent roster.

by HeartOfHawkness on Feb 15, 2012 4:26 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think it has to do with talent

Just as easily as Khali and Santino were randomly thrown in there, they could’ve stuck two guys who are more talented/over/whatever as well. Jinder Mahal, Ted Dibiosi, Justin Gabriel, Hunico, whoever.

your opinion...

I think he’s hilarious… and he could never win in a traditional one on one, but in an hectic match like this he could luck into a win. The crowd would go insane and they could have him drop it back to Bryan before Wrestlemania. I think a mini Bryan/Santino feud would be good TV.

I'd agree if it were a one on one,

but in this type of unpredictable match I think having a shocking outcome is good business. Keep the fans on their toes, and let them know that anything is possible. Because if they never allow something like that to happen, then it’s insulting to the fans to even have the other non main eventers in the Chamber match.

The triple threats, fatal 4 ways, the six pack challenge, battle royals, and the chamber match are perfect opportunities for some outside the box thinking.

You know what...

I don’t dislike this idea. Santino lucks into a win at the EC… on the next Smackdown, Sheamus jumps on the opportunity to challenge him at WM, but Bryan comes out to demand his rematch. We get a brief Bryan/Santino program over a couple of weeks with Sheamus supporting Santino as a fellow face, but also playing on the selfish motivations behind it. Bryan wins his title back, leading into Sheamus/Bryan at WM, assuming that is their plan.

They could do worse considering the state of the SD main event scene. I think backstage segments with Sheamus & Santino could be worth a few chuckles and pretentious Bryan & Santino interacting could be great.

Not like they weren't were already extremely thin roster wise

I said before if I were home I’d order this with friends since it’s the build up to Mania. Now I wouldn’t out of principle. That Smackdown Chamber is the biggest joke having both Khali and Santino in it.

Even if it were caused by the belt (which I doubt) is that really DB’s fault. I’d have to watch the reply, but I thought that strike moves were delivered at close to full force and it’s on the guy getting hit to react properly. Not sure though. I heard that from a friend who met Shane McMahon who told him that, but that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge of how things work in ring.
