On this date in WWE history: Eddie Guerrero pins Brock Lesnar to win the title
On February 15, 2004, over 11,000 pro wrestling fans packed the Cow Palace in Daly City, California, for the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) No Way Out pay-per-view (PPV) featuring a blindfold match between Jamie Noble and Nidia.
Just kidding.
The blindfold match did go down at this event, but the big story here was the headlining bout featuring Brock Lesnar, who was coming out of a feud opposite Kurt Angle and putting his WWE Championship on the line against Eddie Guerrero.
Guerrero had finished up his run as a tag team champion in Los Guerreros, then again with Tajiri, to enjoy a brief stint as United States Champion. "Latino Heat" would lie, cheat and steal his way to main event of No Way Out and not just defeat Lesnar, but pin him with a frog splash, his finishing move, to take home the belt.
The celebration begins, after the jump.
Viva La Raza!

Eddie was one of the greatest, wasn't he?
2003-2005 was my favorite time being a wrestling fan. Lesner was a complete beast, Angle and the Worlds Greatest Tag Team were excellent heels, Eddie was heating it up, Benoit was absolutely amazing, and Cena was just beginning his major push. I didn’t have cable at the time, so I would rush onto wwe.com during homeroom to see what Benoit was doing on Raw. WrestleMania XX, even though it sucked top to bottom, has some of my favorite moments.

It would lead me to believe that @bisping must have pissed off @danawhite something fierce. RT @drjamezkelske: @danhendo just out of curiosity, if the #ufc comes to you and asks you to fight Bisping again how do you respond?" -Dan Henderson

Indeed.
That was when I really liked wrestling and I’m glad that I got to experience being a fan of it during those days. Of course, we have glimpses of greatness here and there from those times but wow, Smackdown Six was really good.

The thing that makes moments like this so great
Is that with guys like Guerrero (and in a few months from this, Benoit), you know this meant the world to them.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
Hey guys,
Long time (2 +years) fan of the site, I’ve read lots of good articles and comments on this site as well as the other Combat Sports websites, SB Nation covers.
A few things that came to mind when I watch that video
One. HOLY CRAP! THAT’S A LOT of bacne on Eddie back!! He was obviously juicing…
Two. What’s with Michael Cole’s commentating while Eddie’s celebrating?!?! He says “Eddie Guerrero” over 20 times. And he says his name in a scary way, almost as if Cole was aware of all the sacrifices and personal issues Eddie had while with the WWE, to me it more so seems like, the WWE gave him the belt, just so Eddie would be happy and wouldn’t leave the WWE. I just don’t understand why they had Cole say his name a million times while showering him with praise and love while reminding the viewers of all the sacrifices Eddie had done in his career all the while Eddie was going down a path of self destruction
Three. Damn Eddie was big at that point in his career, and not big in a natural way, big in the steroid way. Look at photos or videos of him and Benoit back in the WCW days, compared to when they both won the titles in WWE
Four. I’ll always remember the cruiser weight version of Eddie Guerrero from the WCW days, not this HW version of Eddie, this version of Eddie, to me, is hard to look at
one. yes, this was pre-wellness. probably about 99% of the guys were on something during that period…
two. I think that’s more of Cole’s incompetent commentary than any other underlying motive. He had to put Eddie over as strong as possible for people to buy him as world champ, which incidentally never really took off. Also, Eddie never had the political power to be given a title just to keep him from leaving…besides, where would he go? He had pretty much just come back from his indy exile…His “path of destruction” was years earlier…
Three. Yea he was much bigger, but then again look at Mysterio in WCW compared to WWE. Eddie wasn’t a small cruiserweight by any means….Also, he was mostly in the TV/US title “division” during his time in WCW. I’d say he was about the size of Jericho/Punk, pre WWE.
I wouldn’t blame Cole for being incompetent as much as he was handcuffed by Vince McMahon’s direction. Vince hates his announcers using pronouns, which is why you have Cole uttering Eddie’s full name over 20 times when he goes into hard sell mode.

I always thought
the timing was off with Eddy’s win. He was SUPER-over about 6 months prior to this on Smackdown and in typical WWE fashion, they waited until that all died down before pulling the trigger…resulting in a luke-warm title reign. And then when he finally regained his heat as a main event, world title-worthy heel, he has to go and die. Again, such bad timing!
Listen to that crowd eruption when he won
those were the daysm when people actually cared about WWE titles changing hands
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Lloyd, Andy Russell, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene, Andre Reed and Jerry Kramer

People still care
The crowd erupted when Daniel Bryan first won too. One thing that is great about what the WWE is doing now is that they have finally quit switching titles on even a semi-frequent rate. CM Punk has held on to his title since late October and Bryan has held on to it since the middle of December with both guys looking to at least hold the belts through Wrestlemania. Finally it looks like we might not have more than a few title changes throughout an entire year instead of the 10 or so we usually see in a year.
With DBD its more like people were waiting for it to happen
and well with CM Punk the crowd reaction in his hometown was off the charts. But it unless its a guy like Zack Ryder I haven’t seen a crowd erupt for a title change in a while

What title changes are you talking about specifically? Throughout history, some have popped the crowd more than others. That’s just how it goes. I don’t think it’s accurate to say that crowds reacted more in the past than now, especially with some of the best reactions coming to changes that have happened in the past year. Some crowds are hotter than others, some wrestlers are more over than others…. It has little to do with the times.
Even in 2003, we were past the “meaningful” title reign period…That ended in the late 90’s during the Monday Night War, so we’re basically comparing apples to apples here, anyways.
The Jack Swagger win over Zack Ryder for the US Title
is one off the top of my head. It’s been really bad since they just started slapping titles on guy who may not have been ready for it and has really decreased the value of certain titles

I think the decreased value comes from the lack of useful feuds or build up. Cody has feuded with who….Booker T over the last 4-5 months? Now teases at Golddust, and a tease at Bryan a night or two…but that was before DB won the WHC.
Swagger never even HAD a real feud with Ryder did he? It was, “Hey Ryder, that title belongs to me I’M the U.S. champion.” And then…he was. There was no pop for Swagger because I don’t think anyone gives a shit about Swagger positive or negative. They don’t even put him on T.V. even when he IS the champion.
If Rhodes had an actual feud with someone that could be seen as an I.C. Champion, fans might care more. The underlying point you have though is correct. They have devalued the titles in many ways.
